5461. Coimbatore: Corporation stops temple demolition as protesters move high court
- The city corporation on Thursday initiated demolition of a temple on Veeriyampalayam Road near Ramalakshmi Nagar amid protests by right-wing groups and devotees. The drive was, however, stopped in a while after the aggrieved parties moved the Madras high court.
- A town planning department official with the corporation said Suyambu Thamburan Temple was encroaching upon half of Veeriyampalayam Road, which was 50ft wide. The temple is spread across 4,000sqft land.
- The official said based on a petition filed by an individual, the high court had in June ordered demolition of the temple, as it was encroaching upon the road.
- Meanwhile, the aggrieved parties approached the high court. While they did not receive any orders from the court, the officials decided to wait for the court ruling, before proceeding with the demolition drive.
