- The Calcutta High Court’s Jalpaiguri bench on Friday ordered that no one except mandir committee members, priests and their assistants will be allowed at the “garbha griha” (sanctum sanctorum) of Jalpesh Mandir for a specific period over the next two weekends.
- The restrictions will be from 8 pm this Sunday till 4 pm on Monday, and again from 8 pm on August 14 to 4 pm on August 15. - Over the next two weekends, pilgrims will get to see on giant screens that the water flows to the deity in the sanctum sanctorum. Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s orders came after the police and local administration proposed these measures that are already followed at the popular Lord Shiva temples in Tarakeshwar and Deoghar.
- The HC was hearing a petition which said 2-3 lakh pilgrims converging at Jalpesh temple to pour water on the deity during weekends could lead to danger and risk of life since the “garbha griha” is 11 ft below the ground, where the ‘Shiva Linga’ can’t be seen but felt only by touch.
