5391. Tamil Nadu forest secretary refutes Assam claim on temple elephant
- State forest secretary Supriya Sahu has dismissed the claim that Joymala, the cow elephant at the Srivilliputhur Andal temple, was tortured by its mahout. Responding to a letter from the Assam chief secretary, who had ordered a team of officials to inspect Joymala and other elephants in Tamil Nadu,
- "It is unfortunate that the Assam government didn't bother to verify facts with the TN government before sending a team of officers without any jurisdiction or authority to land in Chennai, armed with an order to inspect the elephants. This has created needless controversy and unnecessary hype about the matter."
- The video referred to in the Assam chief secretary's letter was more than one and half years old. After that incident, mahout Vinilkumar and cavadi Sivaprasanth were dismissed. Since then, Joymala has been under the loving care of a team led by mahout Subramaniam and Cavadi Ranjithkumar, she said.

- Four months after permitting the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department to replace 'missing' peacock idol with a new idol in Kapaleeswarar temple, the Madras high court on Friday appointed a committee to look into the correctness of the statue.
- The first bench of Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice N Mala directed a recently-constituted committee to identify and list the temple's agama to ascertain the correctness of the statue as an additional task.
- The bench made it clear that the statute must be changed if the committee comes to the conclusion that there must be a flower in the beak of the peacock and not a snake.

5393. Kohinoor Diamond Belongs To Lord Jagannath, Claims Odisha Body; Seeks Its Return

5394. Technical changes, expansion of temple complex drive up cost of Ram Mandir
- An estimated cost of Rs 1,800 crore will be incurred to build the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and factors that led to the increase in budget estimates include technical changes, expansion of the temple complex and increased cost of land acquisition.
- The construction works on three floors of the superstructure of the temple, comprising the 'Garbh Griha' and five 'mandaps' on the ground floor, started in full swing. India Today spoke to Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust official to understand the factors affecting the cost of the temple construction.
- Champat Rai, the general secretary of the trust, said that technical changes have increased the cost of construction. He said the work which is underway is as per the construction firm's advice, to ensure that the temple has a life span of 1,000 years and it has the capacity to withstand challenges including natural calamities.

5396. Gyanvapi case: 'First hurdle' crossed, says VHP as court upholds maintainability of Hindu side's plea, several BJP leaders welcome verdict
- A local court in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi on Sep12 dismissed a plea questioning the maintainability of a petition filed by five Hindu women seeking worshipping rights of Hindu deities whose idols are located in the Gyanvapi mosque compound.

5397. New road to Tiruttani temple planned
- A detailed project report for laying a new road from atop the Tiruttani hill shrine of Lord Subramaniaswamy to the Chittoor Road is expected to be ready in a couple of weeks.
- Sources in the Highways Department, which will form the 1.95-km long and 3.75 m wide ghat road on a deposit basis, said that the work was likely to commence before this year-end.
- Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) P. K. Sekarbabu said that land belonging to the Revenue department, Forest department and town planning department and a private party are needed for the project that will allow vehicles from the Chittoor side to get into the hill without entering the town, which gets easily crowded.

5398. Plans floated to decongest Delhi's Jhandewalan temple area
- Removal of the statue of Rani Lakshmibai on Deshbandhu Gupta Road is one of the several steps being taken to decongest the roads around Jhandewalan temple. A joint meeting of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, DDA and other agencies on 10sep22 also resolved to make the 1.5-km stretch between Filmistan and Panchkuian T-point signal free and create a new parking lot near the Jhandewalan temple.
- Jai Prakash, mayor of the north corporation, said that the statue of Rani Jhansi will be shifted from its current spot to DCM Chowk. “The relocation will take around a month and a half. We will rename the park at DCM Chowk after Rani Lakshmibai after the relocation,” said the mayor, who heads the naming and renaming committee of the civic body.
- In other short-term and long-term measures to decongest the area, both the rotaries on DB Gupta Road and Rani Jhansi Marg will be removed. “UTTIPEC has already approved the decongestion plan for the area,” disclosed a municipal official, adding that the median cuts on Ram Kumar Marg and the Idgah rotary too would be closed.
