2911. Unicorns in India up by 10 times in 9 years
- On January 15, 2025, the number of unicorns surged from 11 in 2016 to 118 in 2024 in India as the number of start-ups breached the 1.50-lakh mark by the end of 2024 from a paltry 502 in 2016, when the government launched the Start-up India initiative.
- Maharashtra tops the list of States with the highest number of start-ups in the country. The State, which houses the IT hubs of Mumbai and Pune, leads the list with 27,459 start-ups, followed by Karnataka with 16,335 and Delhi with 15,851.
- IT service start-ups have dominated the space with 17,618 start-ups, followed by healthcare and life sciences (14,285) and education (9,047).
2912. Indian Navy gets new strength in the sea
- on 25 January 2025 in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra Prime Minister dedicated the three leading naval combat ships INS Surat, INS Nilgiri and INS Vagsheer to the nation after launching them at the Naval Dockyard .

2913. India's Coal Imports Fall By 3.1% In H1FY25
- India's coal imports dropping by 3.1 per cent in the first seven months of the fiscal year 2024-25 (April-October). During this period, coal imports totalled 149.39 million tonne (MT), down from 154.17 MT in the same timeframe 2023.
- The non-regulated sector, which excludes the power sector, witnessed a more substantial decline of 8.8 per cent in coal imports.
- India's domestic coal output grew by 6.04 per cent, reaching 537.57 MT during April-October 2024, compared to 506.93 MT in the same period 2023.

2914. India Successfully Tests 3rd Generation Nag Mark 2 Anti-tank Missile
- On 1 January 2025 in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested the third generation indigenous anti-tank guided missile 'Nag Mark 2' near the Indo-Pak international border.
- The three missile tests destroyed its targets with complete accuracy. Many senior officers of the Indian Army were present during this test.
- The Nag MK-2 is an advanced anti-tank guided missile system for the Indian Army. It is a lightweight missile, capable of working in all weathers. It weighs about 45 kg and is 6 feet one inch long.
- The Nag Mark 2 anti-tank missile strikes its target at a speed of 230 meters per second, that is, it destroys the enemy sitting 4 kilometers away in 17 to 18 seconds.

2915. NPCI International, UAE fintech partner to enable UPI for Indian travellers
- On January 15, 2025, NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has partnered with a United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based payment solutions provider to offer Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as a transaction method for Indians visiting the West Asian country.
- The collaboration with fintech firm Magnati will enable QR-based UPI merchant payments through point-of-sale (POS) terminals across the UAE.
- The partnership is expected to serve over 12 million Indians travelling to the UAE, including Dubai, annually. In December, 2024 alone, UPI processed more than 16 billion transactions in India.

2916. India sends second tranche of food grain assistance to Lesotho
- India sent a humanitarian assistance consignment to the southern African nation of Lesotho comprising 1000 metric tonnes of sorghum (jowar) on 13 January, 2025 to help in addressing the food security issues in the country.
- This was the second tranche of the food grain assistance of Lesotho from India, which departed from the Nhava Sheva Port in Mumbai on 13 January, 2025.
- Earlier in December, India had sent a humanitarian assistance consignment to the nation comprising 1000 metric tonnes of rice to address the food security and nutritional requirements of people in Lesotho.
2917. C-DOT And IIT Mandi Collaborate To Develop Wideband Spectrum Chip for Advanced Telecom Solutions
- The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has signed an agreement for the development of "Wideband Spectrum-Sensor ASIC-Chip for Enhancing the Spectrum Utilisation
- The C-DOT, the premier telecom research & development (R&D) centre of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), on January 13, 2025 signed an agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi in collaboration with IIT Jammu.
- The agreement has been signed under the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) scheme of the DoT.

2918. ‘Make in India’ expansion: laptop manufacturing begins in Chennai
- Syrma SGS launched a laptop assembly line in Chennai on January 11, 2025, advancing India’s "Make in India" initiative and boosting IT hardware manufacturing.
- Syrma SGS aims for its output to increase from 100,000 to over 1 million. Syrma SGS already operates four manufacturing units in Chennai, and Unit 3 is now dedicated to laptops.
- Syrma SGS has partnered with Taiwanese technology company MSI to manufacture laptops for domestic and global markets.

2919. India among top 25 global arms exporters: FM Nirmala Sitharaman
- From being the second-largest arms importer in 2015 to 2019, India is now among the top 25 arms exporters with over 100 companies exporting products like BrahMos missiles, Pinaka rocket systems, and Dornier aircraft, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on January 13, 2025.
- India’s defence exports have reached an all-time high, surging to ₹21,083 crore in 2023-24 as compared to ₹686 crore in 2013-14, marking a 30-fold increase.
- India has achieved the highest-ever growth in indigenous defence production, and this is where I’d like to share the number. In value terms, today we’ve reached a record high of ₹1.27 lakh crores in 2023-24, marking a 2.7-fold increase compared to 2014-15.
2920. India's role in Apple's success: The story behind Rs 1 trn iPhone exports
- Apple has surpassed the Rs 1 trillion-mark for iPhone exports from India in 2024, achieving record outbound shipments of $12.8 billion (Rs 1.08 trillion), thereby reflecting a 42 per cent year-on-year increase.
- In 2023, Apple exported $9 billion worth of iPhones, representing three-fourths of its domestic manufacturing output of $12 billion.
- Preliminary data shows that of the $12.8 billion in exports, Foxconn (Hon Hai) accounted for 54 per cent, Tata Electronics for 29 per cent, and Pegatron for 17 per cent.
