2931. ISRO prepares to create history, successfully tested two satellites under SpaDeX docking mission
- On 12 January 2025 ISRO conducted a docking trial of two satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), successfully reaching a distance of 15 meters and then 3 meters. The docking process will be completed after further data analysis.
- The mission, part of ISRO's Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), was launched on December 30, 2024, with two 220 kg satellites in a 475 km altitude circular orbit. The docking trial was initially scheduled for January 7 but was postponed due to technical issues.
- ISRO said if successful, this mission will make India the fourth country to have mastered space docking technology, joining the United States, China, and Russia.

2933. India's rice stocks hit record high, eight times the government's target
- India's rice stocks hit a record high at the start of January, reaching eight times the government's target.
- Rice reserves in state granaries, including unmilled paddy, totalled 60.9 million metric tons of Jan. 1, compared to the government's target of 7.6 million tons, data compiled by the Food Corporation of India showed.
- India's rice exports have gained momentum after New Delhi removed most curbs in September and October.

- The Indian Army is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for surveillance, logistics, cybersecurity, and training. AI enhances decision-making, resource management, and combat capabilities.
- Army officials said that AI-powered drones and satellite systems are now being used to gather intelligence and provide real-time data to assist in strategic decision-making.
- AI is also being deployed to strengthen cybersecurity, with its capability to detect and respond to cyber threats. Training simulations for personnel are another area benefiting from AI.
2935. Taiwan’s MSI selects Syrma SGS to manufacture ‘Make in India’ laptops for Indian consumers
- Tailwan’s MSI, a global leader in AI PCs, gaming, content creation, business & productivity and AIoT solutions, has signed an agreement manufacture ‘Make in India’ laptops for Indian consumers.
- Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, a leading electronics systems design and manufacturing company, will collaborate with Tailwan’s MSI as its manufacturing partner in India to produce laptops for the Indian market.
- Through this strategic collaboration, Syrma SGS will assemble laptops for MSI at its Chennai facility.

2936. In a first, Indian University grows spinach tissue in Space
- In a boost to space-based agriculture research, spinach tissue has been successfully grown in zero-gravity conditions, according to early results from India's first non-ISRO biological space experiment.
- The spinach callus tissue, sent by Amity University, Mumbai, and orbiting 350km above Earth, demonstrated growth patterns comparable to ground-based control samples during its first week in space.
- The university sent the spinach callus on board the PSLV Orbital Experiment Module (POEM) as part of the PSLV-C60 mission that launched two Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) satellites into orbit on Dec 30, 2024.
2937. Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin is first woman to be India’s top military doctor
- Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin on October1, 2024 took over as the director general of the Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), the first woman doctor to hold the position.
- The development comes two months after Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair took over as the Director General Medical Services (Army), the first woman officer to be appointed to the position.
- Sarin is 60 and will head AFMS for two years. DGAFMS functions directly under the defence ministry and is responsible for medical policy matters related to the military. Before being appointed to the top position, Sarin was heading the navy’s medical services directorate.
2938. College campus, hostel built with Indian aid handed over in Nepal
- The campus and hostel buildings of a college built with India's assistance in Nepal's Myagdi district was handed over to its management committee on January 6, 2025.
- The campus and hostel buildings of Myagdi Multiple Campus were built with India's financial assistance amounting to NRs 27.93 million under 'Nepal-India Development Cooperation', the Indian Embassy here said in a press release.
- The Myagdi Multiple Campus, established in 1996, is a community-based institution and offers Bachelor and Master level courses. The campus has around 950 students, 70 per cent of whom are girls.

- India has mastered the art of turning tresses into treasure, leading the global market with a jaw-dropping $138 million in hair exports, out of a $157 million global total, according to data from the Imarc Group, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Statista and StartupTalky.
- The global wig sector is a whopping $4 billion industry, which is poised to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.9% from 2024 to 2031, with India leading in human hair exports.
- Accounting for 88% of the global hair exports, the country generates a staggering $550 million annually from hair and related products, according to the data.

2940. India's Tobacco Exports Surge To Record High Of Rs 12,005 Crore, Farmers' Income More Than Doubled
- India's tobacco exports have surged by as much as 87 per cent during the past five years to touch a record Rs 12,005.89 crore ($1.45 billion) in 2023-24 as against Rs 6,408.15 crore in 2019-20, leading to the more than doubling of farmers' income.
- Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco farmers' earnings have more than doubled between 2019-20 and 2023-24 from Rs 124.00 per kg in 2019-20 to Rs 279.54 in 2023-24, said Commerce and Industry Ministry on Jan 01, 2025.
- India is the second largest producer of tobacco in the world after China. India is the fourth largest producer of FCV tobacco in the world after China, Brazil and Zimbabwe. India is the second largest exporter of unmanufactured tobacco (quantity terms) after Brazil.
