2941. For every dollar, India's space sector has given back $2.54 to the economy: Report
- For every dollar generated through investments or revenues in India's space sector, an additional $2.54 has been generated for the national economy, preliminary findings of a report titled "Socio economic impact analysis of Indian space programme", released on August 23, 2024 said.
- The study conducted by Econ One and Euroconsult, commissioned by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), assessed and evaluated the different level of benefits that have been generated by the Indian space activities.
- Indian space sector has contributed $60 billion to the Indian GDP over the last decade through direct, indirect and induced effects. In addition, it has supported more than 4.7 million jobs in the country.

2942. WEF Future Of Jobs Report 2025: Indian Employers Lead In AI Adoption And Technology Transformation
- Indian employers are outpacing global adoption in key technologies, with 35% expecting semiconductors and computing technologies and 21% expecting quantum and encryption to transform operations.
- As per the Future of Jobs Report 2025 published by the World Economic Forum, 0% of Indian employers intend to adopt skills-based hiring by removing degree requirements, surpassing the global average of 19%.
- To address talent needs, 67% of companies in India plan to tap into diverse talent pools, compared to 47% globally.
2943. Microsoft-Indian govt collaborate on AI governance, expand scope of technology
- Microsoft has partnered with the Government of India to establish an AI Center of Excellence in which the tech giant will train 5,00,000 Indians from different backgrounds like developers, students, women entrepreneurs, educators, government officials and more.
- Microsoft has signed an MoU with the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to make lakhs of Indians be able to use AI tools by 2026.
- Mirosoft CEO Satya Nadella’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 6, 2025, resulted in various investments in the field of advanced technology in India.
2944. India maintains status as world's fastest-growing large economy, says UN
- "India would again be the fastest growing large economy in the world" with a projected annual growth rate of 6.6 per cent, according to Hamid Rashid, the UN head of Global Economic Monitoring.
- Hamid Rashid made this statement at the release of the UN's flagship report, World Economic Situation and Prospects 2025, (WESP) on January 9, 2025, which projected the gross domestic product (GDP) to grow slightly faster at 6.8 per cent next year.
- WESP said that India's economy would be bolstered by "strong export growth in services and certain goods categories, particularly pharmaceuticals and electronics".

2945. Mazagon Dock delivers 6th and final Scorpene submarine to Navy
- Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) delivered the final Scorpene-class submarine, Vaghsheer, to the Indian Navy on January, 10, 2025, completing Project 75.
- Under the Project 75, a key initiative in India’s defence indigenisation efforts, MDL constructed six Scorpene-class submarines with assistance from France's Naval Group.
- Vaghsheer features advanced weapon systems and enhanced operational capabilities, adding to India’s underwater combat strength.
2946. India-US launch ‘new era’ in space cooperation
- India and US have launched a ‘new era’ in space cooperation with Washington DC carrying out ‘significant lowering’ of barriers for New Delhi to access strategic technology.
- US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan informed India’s National Security Advisor (NSA), Ajit Doval on January 06, 2025 that the US is amending the missile export control policies to facilitate cooperation with India in outer space in terms of co-development opportunities.
- The US amendment is under the international Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). India is a member of the MTCR. 4. The White House on January 07, 2025, put a fact sheet on India-US cooperation in space saying this “bilateral accelerator” would include “commercial space cooperation, including lunar exploration, human spaceflight, (collecting) geospatial data and services, and the co-development of technology”.
2947. India's Automobile Sales Surge 9.1% in 2024 Amid Growth Across Key Segments
- Retail automobile sales in India grew 9.1 per cent in 2024 to 2.61 crore units, defying multiple headwinds like extreme weather, elections, and uneven monsoons.
- Segment-wise, two-wheeler sales grew 10.7 per cent, three-wheelers 10.4 per cent, passenger vehicles 5.1 per cent and tractor 2.5 per cent segments posted growth, while commercial vehicles remained nearly flat at 0.07 per cent, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA).
- Three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and tractor segments reached new all-time highs; two-wheelers almost breached its 2018 peak and commercial vehicles have yet to surpass its 2018 level.
2948. India hands over defence equipment and stores to the Maldives
- India “handed over defence equipment and stores to the Maldives” on 8 January, 2025. Sources told The Indian Express that these included “utility vehicles” and “berthing equipment” worth Rs 35 crore.
- Indian Defence Ministers Rajnath Singh and Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon met in New Delhi as the two countries moved to restore ties after a hiatus that spread rancour in the two capitals.
- Rajnath and Maumoon also discussed extending the lease of aviation platforms expiring this year – two Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH), gifted by India, are being used by the Maldives for medical evacuation purposes.
2949. India to explore development projects in Afghanistan, will provide additional humanitarian aid
- India has reaffirmed its commitment to Afghanistan by pledging additional humanitarian aid and exploring development projects during Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's meeting with Afghan Acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi in Dubai on January 08, 2025.
- Acting fast to the needs of the Afghan people, India has so far dispatched several shipments consisting of 50,000 MTs of wheat, 300 tonnes of medicines, 27 tonnes of earthquake relief aid, 40,000 litres of pesticides, 100 million polio doses, 1.5 million doses of Covid vaccine, 11,000 units of hygiene kits for the drug de-addiction programme, 500 units of winter clothing and 1.2 tonnes of stationery kits, over the past few years.
- It was also agreed to promote the use of Chabahar port for supporting trade and commercial activities, including for the purpose of humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan.
2950. India ready to help Maldives strengthen its defence capabilities, says Rajnath
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has assured his Maldivian counterpart Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon that India is prepared to assist the island nation in strengthening its defence capabilities.
- India offers providing defence platforms and assets to strengthen the Maldive’s capabilities, in accordance with India’s 'Neighbourhood First' policy and the SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region) vision, the Defence Ministry stated on January 8, 2025.
- The decision to step up defence ties come nearly eight months after India withdrew its military personnel from the Maldives at the insistence of President Mohamed Muizzu.
