2881. How multi-purpose vessel INS Utkarsh is set to enhance Indian Navy's combat capabilities
- INS Utkarsh, a versatile multi-purpose vessel built by L&T for Indian Nay, was launched on January 13, 2025. It is set to enhance maritime operations of the Indian Navy.
- The second of the two multi-purpose vessels (MPV), capable of towing ships, launching and recovering various targets, operating unmanned autonomous vehicles and acting as a trial platform for various indigenous weapons and sensors, INS Utkarsh was launched on from Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai.
- The 106 m long, 18.6m wide vessels, with a displacement over 3,750 tonnes, are designed to achieve a maximum speed of 15 knots. The launch of INS Utkarsh comes within three months of the launch of the first MPV, INS Samarthak.
2882. India to be exports hub for EVs for Suzuki, says President Toshihiro Suzuki
- On January 16, 2025, Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Representative Director and President Toshihiro Suzuki said, “ We would like to develop India as an export hub for all the models."
- Suzuki will be exporting the e Vitara SUV to the markets of Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America and Asian countries. The e VITARA will be exported to Europe and then Japan followed by the other markets in the world.
- Suzuki said, Maruti Suzuki India resumed exports to Japan last year with Fronx and there is a pending order of 15,000 units and currently the model is exported to over 70 countries from India. In 2024, the company achieved exports of 3.26 lakh units, which was the highest ever irrespective of calendar or fiscal year.
2883. India’s First E-Commerce Export Hub Set To Be Operational By March This Year
- In a big step for India's e-commerce sector, the country’s first E-Commerce Export Hub is set to become operational by March 2025, revealed Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
- The pilot phase has been approved for five companies, including logistics aggregator Shiprocket and air cargo handling firm Cargo Service Centre in Delhi, DHL and Lexship in Bengaluru, and goGlocal in Mumbai.
- The initiative aims to streamline and boost India’s e-commerce exports upto over $100 billion by 2030, which currently stand at a modest $5 billion annually, in stark contrast to China’s $250 billion.
2884. India central bank liberalises FX rules to promote cross-border trade
- To encourage the use of the rupee and other currencies to settle cross-border transactions, India's central bank the Reserve Bank Of India, took steps to further liberalise regulations under the foreign exchange management act, it said in a release on January 16, 2025.
- Indian exporters will now be able to open accounts in any foreign currency overseas to settle trade transactions, including receiving export proceeds, and use these proceeds to pay for imports, the Reserve Bank of India said.
- The RBI will permit overseas branches of authorised banks to open rupee-accounts for anyone residing outside the country and looking to settle all permissible current account and capital account transactions with someone residing in India.

2885. Cabinet gives nod to third launch pad at Shriharikota to boost India’s space missions
- India's Union Cabinet approved the third launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh on January 16, 2025.
- New Launch Pad will support Next-Generation Launch Vehicles and human spaceflight programs. It will enhance LVM3 launches and Gaganyaan missions.
- The cost for the third Launch pad at Shriharikota will Rs 3,985 crore and will be completed in 48 months.
2886. Indian Navy Signs Rs 2,960 Cr Deal for MRSAM Missiles with Bharat Dynamics Limited
- India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract worth approximately Rs 2,960 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) on January 16, 2025, for the supply of Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) for the Indian Navy.
- The MRSAM system will enhance the Indian Navy’s air defence capabilities, providing a formidable countermeasure against aerial threats such as fighter jets, missiles, and drones.
- The MRSAM missiles are largely indigenous, contributing to India’s defence indigenization goals. Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) manufactures the system under the collaboration between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
2887. India to provide grant for supplying police vehicles to Sri Lanka
- India would supply vehicles to be used by the Sri Lankan police under a grant, the Indian High Commission here said on January 15, 2025.
- Indian High Commissioner in Colombo Santosh Jha and the top bureaucrat in the public security ministry DWRB Seneviratne have signed the MoU for the grant assistance worth Sri Lankan rupees 300 million.
- The project entails supply of at least 80 single cabs, spare parts and accessories to the police stations in Northern Province of Sri Lanka.
2888. Siachen Glacier Gets Connected: 4G and 5G services empower Indian Army soldiers at world’s highest battlefield
- on 16 January 2025 in Leh district of Ladakh achievement for the Indian Army, Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest and coldest battlefield, has now been equipped with high-speed 4G and 5G connectivity.
- collaboration of Reliance Jio, and the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, has made it possible for troops stationed at the glacier, situated at an altitude of 16,000 feet in the Karakoram Range, to access faster cellular communication and high-speed internet.
- The primary purpose of this initiative is to support the Indian Army, the enhanced network coverage will also benefit the local populace and tourists in the Ladakh region.
2889. Ancient wisdom meets AI: Indian Army showcases evolution of warfare to mark 77th Army Day
- Using vivid digital images generated through AI-based tools, the Indian epics, historic military battles and monumental tales of valour through the centuries were brought alive in a grand show in Pune to mark the 77th Army Day on January 15, 2025.
- The nearly 90-minute military extravaganza titled 'Gaurav Gatha' had an exhilarating mix of live combat demonstrations using tanks, mounted personnel, laser and drone shows, and digital displays on giant screens.
- The narration, backed with life-like images generated through artificial intelligence-based software, also told the evolution of the 'Indian Yodha' from ancient battlefields to modern war zones that now extend to the realm of cyberspace.
2890. US Lifting Curbs on 3 Indian Entities Will Help India’s Energy Sector
- The United States has decided to remove three Indian entities from its restrictive list on January 15, 2025, which will pave way for further civil nuclear cooperation.
- The entities—Indian Rare Earths, Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Center (IGCAR), and Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) have been removed from the ‘Restricted Lists’, prepared by US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS).
- “The removal of Indian entities will support U.S. foreign policy objectives by reducing barriers to advanced energy cooperation, including joint research and development and science and technology cooperation” an official release read.
