2871. Centre’s highways push worth Rs 50,000 crore: All about the proposed high-speed corridors
- The Centre approved eight national high-speed corridor projects on December 27, 2024.
- Proposed 936-km length highways will be constructed at a cost Rs 50,655 crore.
- An eight-lane highway near Pune, a six-lane one connecting Ahmedabad, a four-lane one in Ayodhya are few of the eight national high-speed corridor projects.

2872. Assam features on New York Times' list of 52 places to visit in 2025
- Assam grabs a prestigious 4th spot on NY Times Travel's list of best places to visit in 2025. The list featured Assam's both unique and popular destinations.
- New York Time Travel has listed 52 places to visit in 2025. The list is diverse, featuring destinations ranging from Thailand's tropical retreats to Greenland's Arctic adventures.
- The list featured a picture of the Kamakhya Temple, located in Guwahati. One of the oldest among the 51 Shakti Peeths the temple is unique as a natural stone in the shape of a yoni (female genital) is worshipped. The temple also celebrates the menstrual cycle of the Goddess.

2873. Electric car sales in India jump 20% in 2024, Tata Motors retains top spot
- Electric car sales in India rose 20% in 2024, closing the year just below 100,000 units sold compared to 82,688 the previous year.
- Electric vehicles made up 2.4% of the total 4.07 million vehicles sold, up from 2.1% in 2023. Gasoline, diesel, and hybrid vehicles still dominated the market.
- Tata Motors remained the top electric vehicle seller with 61,496 units sold in 2024, compared to 60,100 in 2023. However, their market share decreased from 73% to 62%.
2874. India no.3 in automobile sector:Gadkari
- Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said on January 9, 2025 that India has become number three globally in the automobile sector.
- Addressing a function at the National Automotive Test Tracks (NATRAX) at Dhar in Madhya Pradesh, Gadakari said that India has surpassed Japan to gain third rank in the world in the automobile sector behind China and the global leader USA.
- “This is the industry which has created 4.50 crore jobs till now – the highest in the country. When I took charge as the minister, the size of the (automobile) industry was 7.5 lakh crore and today its size is 22 lakh cores,” Gadkari stated.
2875. India-made hydrogen train engine most powerful: Railway Minister
- Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on January 9. 2025, said that the hydrogen fuel-run train engine developed by the Indian Railways is the most powerful one manufactured by any country.
- The Railway Minister made the remarks in a panel discussion during the plenary session on "Green Connections: Diaspora's Contribution to Sustainable Development" held at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneshwar on January 9. 2025.
- "Only four countries in the world have hydrogen-powered trains, and they produce somewhere between 500 to 600 horsepower. The engine produced by us has an output of 1,200 horsepower, the highest so far in this category," added Vaishnaw.
2876. India and US to jointly produce sonobuoys for enhanced naval capabilities
- In a landmark development, India and the United States have announced a collaboration to co-produce sonobuoys, advanced underwater detection devices crucial for anti-submarine warfare and Undersea Domain Awareness (UDA).
- The sonobuoy production project was discussed during a meeting between US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval in New Delhi on January 6, 2025.
- Sonobuoys are small, expendable devices used in underwater acoustics to detect submarines and monitor other undersea activities. Deployed from aircraft or ships, these devices are equipped with a floating radio transmitter and an underwater hydrophone.
2877. India sends assistance to hurricane-ravaged Cuba
- India sent relief assistance to the people of Cuba on Jan 10, 2025, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Rafael last year.
- In November 2024, Cuba was struck by a powerful Category 3 hurricane that ravaged the island nation, destroying hundreds of homes, crippling the country's power grid, and damaging other infrastructure.
- a shipment of essential medicines, including antibiotics, antipyretics, painkillers, ORS, and muscle relaxants, departed for Cuba on January 10, 2025 in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Rafael.
2878. India's smartphone exports surpasses $2 bn mark in Oct, sets new record
- India’s smartphone exports have set a new benchmark, surging past the $2 billion mark in October 2024, the highest monthly total ever recorded.
- In the first seven months of the current financial year, smartphone exports in value terms have already exceeded $10.6 billion — marking a 37 per cent year-over-year increase from the $7.8 billion recorded in the same period last year.
- October’s performance, driven largely by Apple’s iPhone, saw a 23 per cent jump from the previous high of $1.78 billion in May 2024, and a 70 per cent increase compared to the $1.2 billion in exports in October 2023.

2879. India's electronics exports hit 24-month high at USD 3.58 bn in December, 2024
- India's electronics exports saw a significant increase of 35.11 per cent to USD 3.58 billion in December 2024, the highest in 24 months
- Since January 2024, the electronic goods exports is recording healthy growth. In October, and November, these shipments were USD 3.43 billion and USD 3.47 billion, respectively.
- Engineering exports, which accounts for about 25 per cent of the country's total outbound shipments, increased 8.35 per cent to USD 84 billion.

- Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, Speaking at the World Congress on Disaster Management, Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDM-DRR) Awards today in New Delhi, highlighted India's proactive role in providing disaster management support to Global South, particularly in flood prevention and mitigation on January 14, 2025,
- Goyal pointed out that India is known to provide disaster management to the neighbouring countries in flood prevention, flood control and in mitigating other disasters.
- A notable example of India’s humanitarian outreach is the ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through this program, India supplied free vaccines to over 100 countries, showcasing its commitment to global health and solidarity.
