2841. India’s coffee exports surge to $1.29 Billion
- India’s coffee exports have grown significantly, reaching $1.29 billion in the fiscal year 2023-24, almost double the $719.42 million in 2020-21, according to a recent press release from the Press Information Bureau in Delhi.
- In January 2025’s first half, India exported 9,300 tonnes of coffee, primarily to Italy, Belgium, and Russia. Arabica and Robusta beans, which constitute approximately three-fourths of India’s coffee production, are primarily exported in unroasted form.
- India’s coffee industry is primarily concentrated in the Western and Eastern Ghats, known for their rich biodiversity. Karnataka is the leading producer, contributing 248,020 metric tonnes in 2022-23, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

2842. Third Phase Of PLI Scheme For White Goods: 24 Companies Including 10 AC Manufacturers Commit Rs 3,516 Crore Investment
- The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced a significant boost to the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for White Goods, with 24 beneficiaries committing investments of Rs 3,516 crore in its third round of applications.
- The Ministry received 38 applications for the third round of the scheme, with 18 new companies provisionally selected and six existing beneficiaries upgrading to higher investment categories.
- The PLI Scheme for White Goods, aimed at enhancing India's manufacturing capabilities, has attracted 84 companies, investing Rs 10,478 crore and estimated production value of Rs 1,72,663 crore.
- Launched in April 2021 with a budgetary outlay of Rs 6,238 crore, the PLI Scheme is set to run from FY 2021-22 to FY 2028-29. It offers incentives ranging from 6 per cent to 4 per cent on incremental sales over a five-year period, following a base year and one year of gestation.

2843. India funded Cultural Center in Jaffna named ‘Thiruvalluvar Cultural Center’
- The Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka’s Jaffna built with Indian assistance has been officially named the Thiruvalluvar Cultural Center in honor of the renowned Tamil poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar on January 18, 2025.
- Built with a $12 million grant from the Indian government, the facility boasts advanced features, including a two-floor museum, a 600-seat auditorium, an 11-story learning tower, and a public square that doubles as an amphitheatre.
- The foundation stone of the Cultural Centre was laid by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Jaffna in March 2015. The facility was inaugurated in March 2022 and dedicated to Sri Lanka in February 2023.

2844. QS World Future Skills Index 2025: India ranks second globally in job market preparedness, leading in AI, digital, and green industries
- India has emerged as the second most prepared job market globally for future in-demand skills, trailing only the United States, according to the QS World Future Skills Index 2025.
- The inaugural Future Skills Index, released by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), highlights India’s strong potential in critical sectors such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital, and green industries.
- India ranks 25th overall across all indicators, earning recognition as a “future skills contender.” Notably, the country excels in the “Future of Work” category, securing the second-highest global score (99.1), just behind the United States.
2845. India sends humanitarian aid to Sao Tome & Principe, reaffirms its commitment to Global South
- India on January 18, 2025 sent humanitarian assistance to the central African nation of Sao Tome & Principe, reaffirming its commitment to the global south.
- According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the assistance comprises medical supplies, including lifesaving, essential medicines like insulin and blood glucose monitors and strips, human albumin, and ORS.
- Earlier in 2019, India gifted 150 computers to the Central African nation towards the IT upgrade of the ministries and secondary schools. A donation of medicines worth Euro 95,000 (approx. USD 111,150) from the Government of India was also handed over to the Sao Tome Health Minister, Edgar Neves, in 2021.
2846. AI set to reshape 38 mn jobs in India by 2030, boost productivity: EY
- Artificial intelligence (AI) adoption could transform 38 million jobs by 2030, driving a 2.61 per cent productivity boost to the Indian economy through gains in the organised sector and a additional 2.82 per cent with the adoption of Gen AI by the unorganized sector, said a report.
- The EY India report shows that 24 per cent of tasks across industries have the potential for full automation, while another 42 per cent can be enhanced through AI, freeing up between 8-10 hours per week for knowledge workers.
- At an industry level, the largest productivity gains are expected in the services sector due to its higher labour share to gross output while manufacturing and construction will see smaller impact.

- India is on the brink of a generative AI (Gen AI) revolution that could transform industries, accelerate digital innovation, and contribute up to $1.5 trillion to the nation’s GDP by 2030, according to the report The AIdea of India, published by EY on January 14, 2025.
- Generative AI is expected to add $359-438 billion to India’s GDP in 2029-30 alone, contributing an additional 0.9-1.1% to annual growth.
- Over the next seven years, Gen AI could contribute between $1.2 trillion and $1.5 trillion to the economy, making it a key driver of India’s future economic trajectory.
2848. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announces $3 bn AI investment in India after meeting with PM Modi
- Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on January 7, 2025 said the company plans to invest $3 billion in India on AI and cloud infrastructure over the next two years.
- The announcement comes less than a week after Microsoft president Brad Smith said the company was on track to invest $80 billion in AI this fiscal year.
- Microsoft was on pace to invest about $80 billion this year to build out AI datacentres, train AI models and deploy cloud-based applications around the world, according to Smith.

- On September 25, 2024, India celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Make in India initiative, a visionary program that has had a profound impact on the country’s manufacturing sector and exports.
- In 2014, India had only two mobile manufacturing units, but as of 2024, this number has skyrocketed to over 200. Mobile exports, once a mere ₹1,556 crore, now stand at ₹1.2 lakh crore—a staggering 7,500% increase. India now produces 99% of the mobile phones used domestically, making it the second-largest mobile manufacturer in the world.
- The electric vehicle (EV) market, virtually nonexistent in 2014, is now valued at $3 billion. India’s defence exports have also surged from ₹1,000 crore to ₹21,000 crore, reaching over 85 countries.
