- In a key development for India's defence manufacturing capabilities, the Government of Maharashtra has formalized an agreement with Tembo Defence Products Private Limited, a subsidiary of Tembo Global Industries Limited during the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 22. 2025.
- According to Tembo Defence Products, the agreement involves a substantial investment of Rs1,000 crore, aimed at strengthening the defence sector in the state. This strategic move is expected to generate 300 new job opportunities.
- The signing ceremony was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who expressed his support for the initiative, and Shabbir Merchant, Director of Tembo Global Industries Ltd.

- India is considering a $450 million deal to sell Russian-backed supersonic cruise missiles to Indonesia as the Southeast Asian country looks to bolster defences.
- The sale of the BrahMos cruise missiles is expected to be announced as early as this week when Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto officially visits India. Prabowo is set to attend the Republic Day celebrations as a special guest on January 26, 2025.
- If the sale goes through, Indonesia would be the second country after the Philippines to acquire the anti-ship cruise missiles.

- India has recently commenced phase three of its Space-Based Surveillance (SBS) program. Under this initiative, it will place 52 surveillance and communication satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geo-stationary Orbit (GEO).
- The ambitious SBS project is part of India’s strategy to reduce reliance on foreign countries like the United States and Israel and to build an indigenous constellation of space-based sensors.
- The SBS-I was formally initiated in 2001 with the launch of four satellites belonging to the Cartosat and Risat series. Once functional, the SBS-III will significantly augment India’s space-based surveillance capability.

- The Ministry of Railways is preparing to launch innovative freight-cum-passenger trains aimed at capturing a share of the time-sensitive parcel and small cargo shipment market, according to sources of Business Standard.
- The train will be a double-decker model within the existing framework of dimensions—freight will be transported on the ground floor, while passengers will be seated on the upper deck.
- The Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala is spearheading the development of the prototype for these trains, with each coach costing approximately Rs 4 crore.

- Indian Railways (IR) operates some trains based on the ‘Push-Pull’ technology and India’s first ‘Push-Pull’ technology based train CSMT-Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express celebrated 6th anniversary on January 19, 2025.
- The term ‘Push-Pull’ technology means a train has two locomotives i.e. one at the front and another at the rear. The locos at both ends allow faster acceleration, thereby reducing the travel time between the two stations.
- The CSMT-Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express covers a distance of 1543 km in 17:55 hrs.

- The Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad successfully conducted a 120-second ground test of an Active Cooled Scramjet Combustor on January 21, 2025.
- Hypersonic missiles, capable of traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 5 (over 5,400 km/hr), are designed to penetrate advanced air defense systems and deliver high-speed precision strikes.
- This comes a little over two months after the DRDO announced the successful test launch of India's first long-range hypersonic missile, capable of delivering payloads over 1,500 km.

- The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on January 21, 2025. inked a deal with Heavy Vehicles Factory, a unit of Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited, for procurement of 47 T-72 Bridge Laying Tanks (BLTs) for the Indian Army, officials said.
- The indigenously-developed T-72 BTL is deployed to launch bridges during offensive and defensive operations conducted by the armed forces.
- The recent deal, being a Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured), will give impetus to the Make-in-India initiative in defence.

- Following its success at Delhi Airport, the Fast Immigration Service has now been launched at seven additional airports across India. These airports include Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, and Ahmedabad on January 17, 2025.
- The 'Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Programme' (FTI- TTP) aims to provide travellers with world-class immigration facilities, ensuring a smoother and more secure international travel experience.
- Initially, this facility has been launched free of cost for Indian citizens and OCI cardholders. The FTI-TTP has been implemented through an online portal ' https://ftittp.mha.gov.in', the release added.

- Faced with uncertainty and delay over the procurement of high-speed trains from Japan, Indian Railways is exploring to launch the much-awaited service with Make-in-India Bullet trains.
- Indian Railways is actively considering running an Indian Bullet train with a maximum speed of 280 kmph on the 508 km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor.
- As per the plan, the indigenously built Indian Bullet train with 280 kmph maximum speed will run from 2030 to 2033 between Mumbai and Ahmedabad and the Japanese bullet train will launch its operations from 2033 onwards.
