2801. Army to showcase indigenous 'Sanjay' Battlefield surveillance system at R-Day parade
- on 24 january 2025 Defence Ministe commissioned the Battlefield Surveillance System ‘SANJAY’, which it is set to be inducted in all operational brigades, divisions and corps of the Army .
- The Sanjay system has been developed under the ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ at an estimated cost of Rs 2,402 crore.
- This system will become a common platform which will help create a common image and data for the Army,” said a source.
2802. Nagpur to launch trolley-electric buses with cheaper fares, modern facilities
- Nagpur commuters will be pleased to hear that an electric bus service similar to a tram is likely to become operational in the city.
- The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken the first steps to set up a trolley-electric bus service which will be in line with the eco-friendly energy usage. These trolley-electric Buses are going to be the first of its kind in India.
- It will operate on 52 km-long stretch of the Inner ring road. To accomplish the goal of energy sustainability, these buses are expected to be 30% cheaper than the existing diesel run buses.
2803. India buying lethal tank
- On 21January 2025, The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Heavy Vehicles Factory, a unit of Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited.
- The procurement of 47 Tank-72 Bridge Laying Tanks (BLT) for the Indian Army at a total cost of Rs 1,560.52 crore
- The BLT is a critical equipment that is employed to launch bridges during offensive/defensive operations by Mechanised Forces. It provides essential bridging capability to the Tank and Armoured Vehicle fleet, thereby enhancing battlefield mobility and strengthening offensive operations
- This initiative, classified as Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured), aligns with the Make-in-India programme in the defence sector.
2804. Driving change. India’s electric bus push accelerates with over 20,000 e-bus orders
- India’s electric bus (e-bus) sector is poised for rapid growth, with public transport authorities placing orders for over 20,000 e-buses, marking a significant boost for the industry.
- Programmes such as FAME I and II, PM-eBus Sewa, and the Electric Drive Revolution initiative represent a combined outlay of ₹282.16 billion. While these policies have supported the deployment of thousands of e-buses, challenges remain in ensuring timely payments from public transport authorities (PTAs).
- The government’s continuous efforts to boost e-bus adoption through various schemes have positively impacted the industry, with over 10,000 e-buses deployed as of December 2024.
2805. India likely to form consortium for global port operations
- India plans to set up a consortium for operating global ports with equity participation by public sector enterprises, The Economic Times has reported. harat Global Ltd will have Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation, Sagarmala Development Company and Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) as stakeholders.
- After signing a 10-year bilateral pact to operate Chabahar port in Iran, India is exploring opportunities to enhance maritime presence and trade connectivity.
- India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL) will invest approximately $120 million in Chabahar port. India has also offered an INR credit window equivalent to $250 million for mutually identified projects aimed at improving Chabahar-related infrastructure.
2806. Wadhawan Port near Mumbai to position India among top 10 global container ports by 2034: Union Minister
- The upcoming Wadhawan Port near the financial capital will help take India into the top-10 among container ports globally by 2034, Union Shipping and Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on January 22, 2025.
- The port off the coast of Dahanu in Maharashtra being developed under a public-private partnership will be able to handle ultra large vessels as well, he said, speaking at a maritime event organised by industry lobby grouping Ficci.
- Sonowal said the government is developing Kandla, Paradip and Tuticorin as green hydrogen hubs.
2807. India's shipping capacity to increase six-fold
- India is expanding its port capacity more than six-fold to reach 10,000 million tonnes per annum by 2047, marking the country's largest-ever maritime infrastructure drive as it positions itself as a global shipping hub.
- “The major ports are already handling 820 MMT of cargo annually, representing a 47 per cent increase since 2014, while overall port capacity has doubled to 1,630 MMT during the same period. ” Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal said.
- Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, T K Ramachandran, noted India's maritime sector is targeting $1 trillion in investments by 2047, with immediate plans for green hydrogen production hubs at major ports.
2808. Indian Army to Order Over $1 Billion of Pinaka MBRL Ammunition
- The Indian Army will purchase over $1 billion of Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) ammunition within a month. Procurement orders will be placed before the current fiscal year ends on March 31, Indian Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi said earlier this week.
- Two categories of orders will be placed: high-explosive pre-fragmented ammunition for 57 billion Indian rupee (around $660 million) and area denial ammunition for 45 billion Indian rupee (around $520 million).
- Developed by the Defense Research Development Organization, the MBRL has been in service since 2000. The Pinaka Mk-I has a range of 40 kilometers (25 miles) while an enhanced version, called Enhanced Rocket System or EPRS, can strike at distances of around 90 kilometers (56 miles).
2809. Walmart announces strategic pilots with India-based startups
- America's mega retail chain Walmart has announced strategic pilots with India-based startups to provide solutions for its US supply chain and sourcing operations.
- The three startups selected for pilot programmes include Pune-based KBCols Sciences, Chennai-based GreenPod Labs, and Bengaluru-based Cropin, a media release said, adding that these companies participated in the Walmart Growth Summit last year.
- The pilot programmes will test solutions that augment the availability of better and more fresh products for Walmart's consumers in the US and around the world, reduce product waste, and create sustainable alternatives for intermediate products used in manufacturing processes such as synthetic textile dyes to reduce environmental impact.
2810. India, Colombia sign Audio-Visual Co-Production Agreement
- India and Colombia on 16 Oct 2024 signed the Audio-Visual Co-Production Agreement, enabling filmmakers from both countries to collaborate on various aspects of film production.
- The agreement is also expected to boost the utilisation of Indian locations for film shoots. This would increase India's visibility as a preferred film-shooting destination globally and attract foreign exchange.
- Previously, India had signed similar agreements with several other countries. These include Italy and the UK in 2005, Germany and Brazil in 2007, France in 2010, New Zealand in 2011, Poland and Spain in 2012, Canada and China in 2014, South Korea in 2015, Bangladesh in 2016, Portugal in 2017, Israel in 2018, Russia in 2019, and Australia in 2023.
