2781. India, Indonesia ink 5 pacts to expand defence, trade relations
- India and Indonesia on January 25, 2025 agreed to work together in defence manufacturing and supply chains, diversify two-way trade basket and boost maritime security ties.
- Following wide-ranging talks between Indian PM and visiting Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, five pacts providing for cooperation in areas of health, traditional medicine, maritime security, culture and digital space were signed.
- Subianto had opened the infrastructure industry in the country for Indian private sector. “Indians are free to invest in ports, airports, railway infrastructure and many other sectors… Tourism is also an important sector for the two countries. Nearly seven lakh Indian tourists visited Indonesia last year, a huge rise,” he said.
2782. These 2 Indian Cities Are The First To Join Wetland Accredited Cities List
- Indore and Udaipur have become the first two Indian cities to join the global list of accredited wetland cities under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
- Earlier this month, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) submitted three nominations from India for Wetland City Accreditation (WCA) - Indore and Bhopal from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan's Udaipur.
- Sirpur Lake, a Ramsar Site in Indore, has been recognised for water bird congregation and is being developed as a bird sanctuary. Udaipur in Rajasthan is surrounded by five major wetlands, namely, Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar, and Doodh Talai.

2784. ISRO’s historic 100th launch this month: Advanced navigation satellite with Made-in-India atomic clocks
- On January 25, 2025, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to mark its 100th launch by send off a 2,250-kg navigation satellite aboard the GSLV-F15 rocket from Sriharikota.
- The NVS-02 is the second of the five second-generation satellites developed by the space agency to replace the existing satellites in the country’s navigation constellation Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System.
- The new generation of satellites have a longer lifespan of 12 years and are also equipped with indigenously developed, more accurate atomic clocks. The new generation of satellites also utilise L1 frequency, which is most commonly used in the US Global Positioning System (GPS), and is likely to lead to more utilisation by smaller devices such as fitness trackers.

2785. Argentina's YPF signs deal with Indian firms to export LNG
- Argentina's state-run oil company YPF (YPFDm.BA), opens new tab signed a memorandum of understanding with three Indian firms to potentially export up to 10 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year, the company said on Jan 21, 2025.
- YPF Chief Executive Horacio Marin inked the deal in New Delhi with executives from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (OIL), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Videsh Limited.
- The agreement also covers cooperation in lithium, critical minerals, and hydrocarbon exploration and production, YPF said in a statement.
2786. Isro ships crew module for first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission
- In a milestone, the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has dispatched the Crew Module for the first uncrewed mission of Gaganyaan (G1). The Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) completed the integration of the liquid propulsion system on January 21, 2025.
- This system employs 12 thrusters, each with a 100N capacity, along with a pressurisation system with high pressure gas bottles and the propellant feed system along with the associated fluid control components.
- Gaganyaan is poised not only to showcase India’s growing expertise in space exploration but also to inspire a new era of scientific innovation.
2787. Mukesh Ambani buys Nvidia AI chips, plans to build largest data centre in India: Report
- Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, is planning to build what could become the world’s largest data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, according to a report by Bloomberg.
- To support this ambitious move, Reliance is procuring advanced AI semiconductors from Nvidia Corporation. These high-performance chips are essential for the complex computations required by AI-driven tools, such as ChatGPT and other generative AI platforms.
- The facility, expected to boast a total capacity of three gigawatts, would be a huge move in India’s tech landscape, easily outpacing current global benchmarks by a big margin.
2788. India's renewable energy capacity reaches 217.62 GW with record additions in 2024
- India’s total non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity reached 217.62 GW as of January 20, 2025, driven by record additions of 24.5 GW in solar capacity and 3.4 GW in wind capacity during 2024, according to official data.
- India’s renewable energy growth reflects a significant step toward its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030. Solar energy continued to dominate the renewable energy mix, accounting for 47% of the total installed capacity.
- Utility-scale solar installations rose sharply with 18.5 GW added in 2024, a nearly 2.8-fold increase from 2023. Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu led the growth, contributing 71% of the year’s utility-scale installations.
- Rooftop solar capacity also saw a 53% increase, with 4.59 GW added, supported by the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which enabled 7 lakh rooftop installations within ten months. Off-grid solar recorded a 182% increase, adding 1.48 GW.
2789. NTPC JV setting up 50 MW solar project in Sri Lanka
- State-owned NTPC on Jan 21, 2025 said it is setting up a 50 MW solar project in Sri Lanka in a joint venture (JV) with Ceylon Electricity Board.
- The project by the 50:50 JV named Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL) is being set up at Sampoor in Trincomalee in the neighbouring island nation.
- The tariff for the 50 MW, extendable to 120 MW, has also been finalized after rounds of deliberations with various stakeholders in Sri Lanka, NTPC said. It has been set at 5.97 US cents per unit.
