20611. Chennai metro rail starts phase-2 project in the city
- The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), has started phase-2 of the project in the city. The corporation has set June 2025 as the deadline for the Powerhouse in Kodambakkam to Poonamallee stretch via Vadapalani and Porur and December 2025 for the rest of the corridor.
- According to a report published by the Times of India, workers are preparing the site for construction on some stretches near Porur by stopping the traffic.
- CMRL officials said that during construction, traffic diversion was not required on the Porur-Poonamallee stretch as the road was wide enough for both barricading for the construction and the daily vehicular movement.
20612. Director Handicrafts inaugurates extension unit of Weavers Service Centre
- Director Handicrafts and Handloom, Jammu, Dr Vikas Gupta, inaugurated extension branch of Weavers Service Centre, Srinagar, being run by the office of Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Union Ministry of Textiles at Janipur, Jammu.
- Joint Director Handloom, Deputy Director Planning, Deputy Director Trainings, Assistant Director, Weavers Service Centre, Bemina, Srinagar and others officials from Handicrafts and Handloom department were present on the occasion.
- Vikas Gupta said that establishment of this extension centre was a long pending demand of weaver community of Jammu since 2004. He added that the Centre will play a pivotal role in upgrading and promoting the weaving craft in Jammu division by providing technical assistance, skill up gradation training to the beneficiaries through Samarth Scheme besides raising awareness regarding various central welfare schemes. It will further facilitate weavers to get GI registration and handloom marks, he asserted.
20613. Plan to develop pre-partition Jammu Rly Station as heritage site shelved
- In a shocking development, the much-hyped plan to convert pre-partition Jammu Railway Station at Bikram Chowk as heritage site has been shelved mainly because of non-cooperation from the Transport Department, which refused to shift the workshop of Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation to some other location.
- The Railway Station was built in 1897 and was on the Jammu-Sialkote Railway Line, which had train services passing through R S Pura, Miran Sahib and Suchetgarh. The Railway Station was abandoned after the partition as the railway line to Sialkote was broken.
- On January 29, 2021, the then Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor Baseer Ahmed Khan, who was also looking after the affairs of the Tourism Department, visited the historic Railway Station at Bikram Chowk and directed the officers to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for its recreation.
20614. Over 9,500 militants surrender, peace restored in Northeast: Amit Shah
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that with the initiative of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government over 9,500 militants of various outfits in the northeastern region have surrendered to the government and peace has been prevailing in Manipur and other northeastern states.
- "In Assam, the historic Bodo accord was signed. A large number of Bodo militants and extremists in Karbi Anglong district have surrendered to the government. Instead of arms and ammunition, the former militants now carry laptops, keys of industrial enterprises, bikes and vehicles,"
- The Home Minister while addressing election rallies in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, said that the government would hold discussions with the Kuki militant outfits in Manipur and expected to resolve their problems, if any, to bring them back into the mainstream.

20615. AC approves policy for promotion of Foreign Investment in Industrial sector in J&K
- The Administrative Council (AC) which met here under the chairmanship of the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, on Wednesday approved the Policy for Promotion of Foreign Investment in the industrial sector in Jammu and Kashmir- 2022.
- The new policy is based on the guiding framework on FDI issued by the Government of India through the RBI and DPIIT and will be valid for the next 10 years. It aims to facilitate large foreign investments greater than Rs.100 crore with a minimum of 51% foreign stakes.
- The policy also provides for identifying parcels of land in various industrial estates to be given exclusively to industries with foreign investments including vertical rise premises in the form of multi-purpose buildings/complexes, with plug and play facilities.
20616. Subsidy worth Rs 348.48 cr released to JK entrepreneurs: V-C KVIB
- Jammu and Kashmir Khadi and Village Industries Board (J&K KVIB) has released a whopping amount of Rs. 348.48 crore as margin money (subsidy) in favour of entrepreneurs who had applied loan from the board since 2019.
- VC informed that the board has released this amount to 15,459 unit holders under JK Rural Employment Generation Programme (JKREGP) and Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) directly benefitting 118,188 individuals of the UT in these 3 years.
- 5338 women entrepreneurs have been assisted by the board under its various programmes including providing subsidy of Rs. 1.58 crore to 49 ex-servicemen and war widows. Besides, J&K KVIB is establishing eight clusters under handloom, handicrafts and beekeeping sectors under Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of traditional Industries (SFURTI) of Union Ministry of MSME, she informed.
20617. IIT Guwahati to collaborate with Assam government on various projects to boost region's development
- Assam government and the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati had a detailed meeting to prepare to plan the future course of action and collaborate in many disciplines linked to the region's development.
- The focused discussion areas were Opening of a Mining Department at IIT Guwahati, Organising the international road safety conclave, Methods of advancing tea technology, Support for Assam Skill University
- Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Director IIT Guwahati has said, “As per the request of the state government, IIT Guwahati will be very glad to contribute mainly in the areas focusing in the exploration of mines & minerals, commerce & entrepreneurship development, involvement of drones in various sectors, transport sector – Inland water transport, water buses, road safety, aspects related to skill development in multiple upcoming sectors and establishing various centres of excellence & state of the art laboratories at the institute.”

20618. Rs 10 crore to be earmarked for skill development of tribal youth
- Tribal Affairs Department, Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta Monday said Rs 10 crore had been earmarked for skill development of tribal youth.
- An official spokesman in a statement issued here said that the chief secretary impressed upon the department to prioritise skilling of tribal youth through the network of youth clubs and asked the Mission Youth to exclusively provide gainful employment opportunities to the eligible youth from tribal areas for which Rs 10 crores would be specifically earmarked.
- The chief secretary also launched the departmental scholarship portal for streamlining the disbursement of scholarships to tribal students. With the launch of the portal, the chief secretary disbursed Rs 12 crore to the eligible beneficiaries through DBT.
20619. Centre approves Rs 13,020 cr for border infra and management
- The Central Government has approved Rs 13,020 crore for the continuation of the Central sector umbrella scheme of Border Infrastructure and Management (BIM) during the 15th Finance Commission cycle from 2021-22 to 2025-26. The decision will strengthen infrastructure for improving border management, policing and guarding, an official statement said.
- The BIM scheme will help in the creation of infrastructure such as border fence, border flood lights, technological solutions, border roads and border outposts (BOPs) and company operating bases to secure India’s borders with Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar. India’s border with Pakistan is 3,323 km long, including about 775 km of the Line of Control. The length of border is 4,096 km with Bangladesh, 3,488 km with China, 1,751 km with Nepal, 699 km with Bhutan and 1,643 km with Myanmar.
- The Government has been taking many initiatives that include expeditious construction of fencing, floodlighting and roads along its borders with Bangladesh, Pakistan and Myanmar, and construction of strategic roads along its borders with China, Nepal and Bhutan.
- The Government has also deployed hi-tech electronic surveillance equipment on International Borders and constructed additional BOPs. The projects are implemented in 111 border districts to meet special development needs of border population with focus on people living within 50 kilometers of the International Border.
20620. J&K all set to have state-of-art forensic science facilities
- Jammu and Kashmir is all set to get a major boost to upgrade its existing forensic capability as Prime Minister Narendera Modi has approved a huge outlay to give a big push to the forensic science facilities in the UT. Primary focus will remain on improving testing capability to lessen the dependency on other states so that investigations remain time-bound and justice prevails.
- Sources said that Prime Minister Modi approved the outlay under the Central Scheme for Modernisation of Forensic Capacities at Rs 20280. 50 Crore on February 13. “Of this Rs 18839 outlay has been approved for J&K and north east states,” sources privy to the development, said.
- An official in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said J&K will get a major push from the Centre to raise its forensic science facilities. “The thrust on J&K is to upgrade its forensic science facilities by ensuring up to the mark testing facilities within the UT to lessen the dependency on other States especially Chandigarh and Delhi,” the official said, adding “the move will help reduce the time of investigations, curb crimes, arrest culprits, and ensure fair probe in a time-bound manner.”
