20601. Bharat Biotech Applies for WHO Emergency-Use Listing, Claims 90% Documents Submitted
- The remaining documents are expected to be submitted next month. The company is awaiting for a pre-submission meeting to be held in May-June.
- Following the pre-submission meeting, it will be required to go through 2 more stages, the acceptance of the dossier for review and the final status of assessment before its application is accepted.
- As per data available, less than 10 nations have officially approved the Covaxin. Most countries only recognize Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield as the required vaccine for passengers coming from India, reported Moneycontrol. Speaking with Wion, Joint managing director of Bharat Biotech, Suchitra Ella said their vaccine, COVAXIN has been proved to be neutralizing all these variants including the double mutant, which has been observed in India & has an edge given it is inactivated virus produced in cell culture or Vero cell platform.
20602. Arunachal Pradesh : Rural Development Trust – SSRDP Illuminating Remote Schools Through Solar Electrification
- The Sri Sri Rural Development Programme (SSRDP) – a rural development body aiming to empower the economically challenged through best practices and environmentally sustainable methods has used solar-powered technology to electrify far-flung educational institutions
- It has been committed to provide digital literacy in 20 schools, 9 communities, and 3 Primary Health Care (PHCs) across the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. These schools were diligently identified via surveys by giving special consideration to remote areas without basic amenities
- Arunachal Pradesh’s steep terrain proved to be a significant challenge. But, despite all of the problems that come with pandemics, the SSRDB team worked around the clock to complete the initiative ahead of schedule, and today these schools are equipped with a hybrid solar power system as well as a power backup in the absence of solar energy.
- Over 2000 youngsters are currently receiving assistance, the majority of them are tribe members. This has opened up a world of opportunities for students to use new teaching aids, computers, and remote schooling using smart class.

20603. MRDF targets 100% adoption of solar mini-grids in Mon district of Nagaland
- In an initiative to deliver last-mile access to electricity in rural areas of Nagaland, the Mon district administration and Mithun Rural Development Foundation (MRDF) inaugurated their first of the three solar mini-grids at Totokchingha village
- The two organizations signed a 20-year agreement to set up mini solar grids in rural Nagaland in January this year.The first three grids have been financed by Smart Power India. These are just first of the several mini-grids that are going to be installed in the Mon district. This project will make power available 24×7.”
- In the next 3-4 years, we will install mini-grids for all 130 villages in Mon district. This pilot will be eventually scaled across all villages in Nagaland. We are following a PPP model of partnership – public, private and people, people being the most important part. Smart Power India has given us a roadmap to do this in the next seven years

20604. Matheran railway set to get loco workshop to keep trains on track
- Matheran’s heritage 2-ft narrow gauge railway is getting its own little locomotive maintenance workshop up on the hill. This is done parallelly along with the restoration of the line that has been shut for the past three years.
- The new hilltop maintenance workshop will not only solve the age-old problem but also have a bank of locomotives uphill at Matheran, keeping the services running at least till Aman Lodge.
- The construction of the line, built by Abdul Hussain Peerbhoy, began in 1904 and was finally opened to traffic on March 22, 1907.
20605. IBM opens a new cybersecurity hub in Bengaluru
- Tech behemoth IBM has announced a multi-million dollar investment in its cybersecurity operations with the opening of a new IBM Security Command Center in Bengaluru.
- The company said that the new facility will be the first of its kind across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region for training cybersecurity response techniques through highly realistic, simulated cyber attack – designed to prepare everyone from C-Suite through technical staff.
- Asia now tops the most targeted region for cyberattacks – representing 26 per cent of attacks analysed in 2021.
20606. India gets first batch of Rafales with country-specific enhancements
- Three Rafale jets touched down in India, taking the total number of the 4.5-generation fighters delivered to 35 now under the Rs 59,000 crore deal inked with France in September 2016.
- The three Rafales have come with hardware tweaks for the 13 India-specific enhancements (ISEs), which include the capability to fire top-notch Meteor air-to-air missiles, while the software upgrade will take place here. The ISEs have cost India around Euro 1.3 billion in the overall Euro 7.8 billion contract for the 36 jets.
- Already armed with the over 300-km range `Scalp’ air-to-ground cruise missiles and other armaments, the Meteor missiles with a strike range of 120 to 150-km will make the omni-role Rafales lethal in beyond visual range combat with Chinese or Pakistani jets.
- The twin-engine Rafale, with a combat range of 780-km to 1,650-km without mid-air refueling, packs a deadly punch. The single-engine Tejas with limited endurance, however, still has a long way to go in terms of combat capabilities.

20607. Garuda Aerospace targets to make 6 lakh drones, create new jobs
- Garuda Aerospace, the city-based drone start-up, is aiming to manufacture six lakh drone besides creating six lakh jobs by 2025 under its Kisan Drone initiative. The company announced ‘Drone-as-a-Service’ initiative to empower farmers and agriculture sector by adding value to the farming ecosystem.
- The drone-based solutions offered by Garuda Aerospace have been backed by hardware, software and analytical tools to improve efficiency and reduce cost.
- Garuda Aerospace pledges to manufacture six lakh drones under its Kisan Drone initiative thus aiding the farmer fraternity with state-of-the-art technology and solutions for insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers..”, the company said in a statement here
20608. Noida Pod Taxi May Have 12 Stations, Ride To Be Charged Rs 8 Per Km: Here's Everything You Need To Know
- The detailed project report (DPR) for the Rs 810-crore Noida pod taxi project that is being planned to connect Greater Noida to the Noida International Airport in Jewar was approved by Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).
- The ride in the Noida pod taxi is likely to be charged Rs 8 per km, the report stated The pod taxi rides will be available at a frequency of just 20 seconds
- Development work for the first phase of the Noida International Airport in Jewar is underway. The Greenfield airport is being developed in four phases and billed to be the biggest when completed with five or six runways spread in an area of 5,000 hectare, according to project officials.

20609. Suzuki, Toyota in talks to make electric cars in Gujarat
- The Gujarat plant of Japanese carmaker Suzuki Motor could be used to manufacture electric cars for both Maruti and Toyota, a top Maruti Suzuki official said, confirming that discussions are on.
- Suzuki, which is the parent of Maruti Suzuki, has been selected for benefits under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, and may make green cars for requirements of both Maruti and Toyota.
- Toyota Japan has announced an aggressive global plan for electric models, but added that he is not sure whether any of them would come into the fold of Suzuki’s Gujarat plant.
20610. Sify ties up with Vibrant Energy for over 230-MW green power project
- Tapping renewable energy for its data centre business, Sify Technologies, the Nasdaq-listed and Chennai-headquartered digital ICT solutions provider has sealed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Vibrant Energy Holdings, a majority-owned subsidiary of Blue Leaf Energy Asia Pte Ltd which is a portfolio company of Macquarie’s GIG, for 231 MW of solar and wind energy to power Sify’s latest hyper-scale data centres.
- The companies will jointly invest Rs 1,250 crore for 231 MW of green power.
- The PPAs are for total 231 MW of solar and wind energy capacity to power Sify’s latest hyperscale data centres, of which 67 MW solar PPA had been signed in March 2021 and recently commissioned.
