1241. Smartphones emerge as India’s 5th largest export item in FY22
- On 13 June 2023, it was reported that Smartphone exports reached $10.9 billion in 2022, making India the fifth-largest exporter.
- In the fiscal year ending March 2023, India’s smartphone exports doubled to $10.9 billion, rising from $5.4 billion in 2022. Smartphones climbed from ninth to fifth in India’s export rankings.
- Apple contributed half of all smartphone exports, followed by Samsung.

1242. Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi railway station renamed after Rani Lakshmibai
- On December 29, 2021, the Jhansi railway station in Uttar Pradesh was officially renamed Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station to honor the legendary queen’s role in the 1857 revolt against British rule.
- The renaming, approved by the Central Government, was announced by CM Yogi Adityanath on Twitter, and the Railways began implementing the change following the official notification.

1243. India’s mobile phone exports double to $11.12 billion in FY23
- On April 13, 2023, India’s mobile phone exports surged to $11.12 billion in FY23, doubling from 2022.
- According to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), mobile phone exports from India doubled from ₹45,000 crore in FY22 to ₹91,000 crore ($11.12 billion) in FY23.
- Apple led the surge with $5.5 billion in exports, followed by Samsung with around ₹36,000 crore.
- The performance exceeded the government’s target of $10 billion in exports.

1244. India, Japan sign MoC to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals supply chains
- On 30 August 2025, it was reported that during the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in Tokyo, Prime Minister of India and Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between India’s Ministry of Mines and Japan’s METI to strengthen critical minerals collaboration.
- The MoC aims to build resilient and diversified supply chains vital for energy security, national security, and net-zero goals. Cooperation includes exchange of mineral policies, joint project development, mining auctions, deep-sea mining, extraction, processing, and stockpiling, alongside joint investments in India and resource-rich countries.
- The pact boosts India-Japan strategic partnership by expanding cooperation beyond minerals to economy, health, AI, mobility, science & technology, and rare earth elements. It underlines both nations’ intent to secure critical resources while supporting sustainable growth and global energy transition.

1245. India set to cross $10 billion in mobile exports in FY23
- On March 22, 2023, it was reported that Smartphone exports are projected to exceed $10 billion in FY23, doubling from 2022.
- Driven by the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, India’s smartphone exports are expected to surpass $10 billion in FY23.
- Apple, assembling iPhone models 12 through 14 Plus in India, contributes about half of these exports, while Samsung accounts for around 40%.
- Currently, India produces 10-15% of the world’s iPhones, a share expected to rise to 45–50% by 2027. Key export destinations include the UAE, US, UK, Netherlands, and Italy.

1246. Habibganj Railway Station Renamed After Gond Queen Rani Kamlapati, Says MP CM
- On November 13, 2021, the Habibganj railway station in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, was renamed Rani Kamlapati Station to honor the Gond queen’s bravery and legacy, coinciding with the upcoming Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on November 15.
- Rani Kamlapati, the last Hindu queen of Bhopal, is remembered for her courage and sacrifice, including performing ‘jal jauhar’ after Afghan commander Dost Mohammed deceitfully took over her kingdom.

1247. 'Made In India' Smartphones Grew 15% In Q2, 32% Surge In Exports
- On 30 August, 2025 It was reported that, In Q1 FY26 (April–June 2025), shipments of ‘Made in India’ smartphones grew 15% YoY, driven by a 32% rise in exports and 8% domestic growth, positioning India as a global mobile manufacturing hub.
- Growth was fueled by Dixon Technologies’ 196% surge making it the top manufacturer, Foxconn’s 71% rise through iPhone exports, and new entries like BPL producing for vivo and OPPO. Tata also saw steady gains as global brands outsourced to Indian EMS players.
- India’s mobile sector has expanded rapidly, with exports rising 127 times and production 28-fold in a decade. Backed by PLI and other schemes, India shifted from an importer to near self-reliance, hosting 300+ units and generating 25 lakh jobs.

1248. Apple begins exporting iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models from India
- On September 26, 2022, it was reported that the First exports of iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models assembled in India.
- Between April and August 2022, Apple’s iPhone exports from India crossed $1 billion, with projections to reach $2.5 billion by March 2023. These shipments were primarily headed to Europe and the Middle East.
- Apple began producing the iPhone 13 in India earlier in 2022 and later announced local manufacturing of the iPhone 14.

1249. India’s Engineering Exports Surge In July 2025, Turkey Sees Decline
- On 30 August,2025 It was Reported that, In July 2025, India’s engineering goods exports rose 13.8% to USD 10.43 billion, compared to July 2024, with major growth in shipments to the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Brazil, and China, according to the EEPC report.
- Growth came from rising demand in key markets, though exports to Turkey, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore fell due to geopolitical tensions. The realignment of global supply chains and inward-looking trade policies posed challenges, with 29 out of 34 engineering panels recording growth.
- The US remained India’s largest market (22% share), followed by EU and WANA. However, a new 25% US tariff (effective 27 August 2025) threatens competitiveness. Experts stress market diversification and government support to sustain growth and advance India’s global trade share.

1250. Bengal’s ‘Jhansi Rani’: Indian Railways Broke Tradition To Honour this Freedom Fighter
- In 1958, Indian Railways named Belanagar railway station in Howrah, West Bengal after Bela Mitra, revisiting her story on August 2, 2021. She became the first woman in India to have a railway station named in her honour.
- Bela Mitra (1920–1952), niece of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, was a brave freedom fighter and member of the Indian National Army’s Jhansi Rani Brigade, earning her the title “Jhansi Rani of Bengal.”
- The station’s naming honours her courage, patriotism, and pioneering role as a woman in India’s independence movement, serving as a lasting tribute to her legacy.
