23001. Health Minister releases commemorative Postal Stamp on COVID-19 Vaccine to mark 1st anniversary of India's National COVID Vaccination program
- Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya today released a commemorative Postal Stamp on COVID-19 Vaccine to mark the first anniversary of India's National Covid-19 Vaccination program. This stamp signifies the remarkable work done by the frontline healthcare workers and scientific community across the country in protecting the people against the COVID pandemic.
- Vaccination was made free for everyone above 18 years of age on 21st June, 2021. The current vaccine production capacity of Covishield in India is approximately 25 crore doses per month, and that of Covaxin is around six crore doses per month.
- The Minister said, 93 per cent of people above 18 years are vaccinated with 1st dose and 70 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated.
23002. This Ratan Tata-backed fuel-to-door startup wins National Startup Award 2021
- Today on the National Startup Day, Pune-based Repos was awarded the National Startup Award 2021 at the prestigious 6-day Startup India Innovation Week.
- Repos was amongst the 150 entrepreneurs who got the opportunity to present their policy recommendations at the virtual gathering presided by PM Narendra Modi. Repos won this award in the Energy distribution category.
- The Ratan Tata-backed startup, Repos, was recognized by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for their door-to-door delivery of fuel.
23003. IIT Kanpur launches two new departments in the fields of design, space science and astronomy
- The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has approved setting up two new departments in the fields of Design, Space Science and Astronomy, making the total tally to 20 academic departments.
- The institute’s design programme that has been in existence since 2002 will be transformed into the Department of Design. The institute is also planning to launch a Bachelor of Design programme starting as early as 2023.
- The Design Department will have a design cell to address the needs of the industry in areas of new product conceptualization and development, product design, engineering design, branding, user experience, and packaging.
- The institute claims it to be one of the first-of-its-kind departments in India to bring together engineers, astronomers, astrophysicists, and planetary scientists in order to meet the growing requirement of education, training and research in some vital areas of research, such as instrumentation for space missions and Astronomical observatories, Spacecraft design, and Space Mission planning, among others.

23004. India tests its indigenous INS Kochi with Russian Navy
- Indigenously designed ‘Guided Missile Destroyer’ INS Kochi of the Indian Navy, exercised with Russian RFS Admiral Tributes in the Arabian Sea, the Defence Ministry stated here .
- This is for the first time that the Indian Navy has tested its indigenously designed and built guided-missile destroyer and was tested with the Russian Federation Navy on January 14 to showcase India’s defence capabilities.
- “The exercise has showcased cohesiveness and interoperability between the two navies and included tactical manoeuvres, cross-deck helicopter operations and seamanship activities,” said a senior officer of the Defence Ministry.
23005. Timeline: World's largest vaccination drive - how India administered over 150 crore jabs
- Last year on January 16, India commenced the world`s largest vaccination drive to vaccinate its massive population of around 1.38 billion against the COVID-19 infection.
- In the year since the country`s vaccination drive began, the country has administered 1,56,76,15,454 doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

23006. India's first Coal to Methanol Plant starts commercial produciton
- India’s first indigenously developed Coal to Methanol (CTM) Plant has started functioning with more than 99 % of purity opening a new avenue to convert high ash coals to methanol.
- The 0.25 TPD (Tons per Day) capacity CTM pilot plant was designed, developed, and installed by the BHEL, and has been producing methanol with 99 % accuracy, said CMD Shinghal Nalin Shinghal.
- The project was supported by the Department of Science and Technology with a Rs 10 crore grant. “After four years of hard work BHEL successfully demonstrated a facility to create 0.25 TPD Methanol from high ash Indian coal using a 1.2 TPD Fluidized bed gasifier,” said a senior officer of the BHEL.

- केंद्र शासित प्रदेश जम्मू कश्मीर के अनंतनाग के इनोवेटर मुस्ताक अहमद डार ने श्रृंखलाबद्ध ढंग से कई यंत्र विकसित किए हैं जिससे स्थानीय लोगों के लिए अखरोट के प्रसंस्करण का काम आसान हुआ है। उन्होंने खंबों पर चढ़ने के लिए भी एक यंत्र विकसित किया है।
- इसने प्रसंस्करण के दौरान गोले के टूटने और उड़ने के रिस्क को कम कर दिया है, जिससे आंखों में चोट लगने का खतरा भी कम हुआ है। इस प्रौद्योगिकी के प्रति अंतरराष्ट्रीय बाजारों ने भी रुचि दिखाई है, विशेष रूप से 2017 में भारत-अफगानिस्तान व्यापार एवं निवेश प्रदर्शनी के अवसर पर अफगानिस्तान के व्यापारियों ने इसमें दिलचस्पी दिखाई।
23008. First ever missile export from India! After ASEAN nation, next could be UAE
- Export of the Indo-Russian BrahMos Missile to the Philippines is confirmed. Once the contract is inked before the month ends, India will be joining the elite group of countries which export missiles to other countries.
- Discussions with UAE for the sale of the BrahMos is in advanced stages. As reported earlier, the Gulf nation was among the first from that region expressing interest in buying the BrahMos Missile and had also expressed interest in the indigenous Akaash Missile.
- Another country from the region which has shown interest is Saudi Arabia and the discussions were put on hold due to the COVID situation.

23009. Honda to begin battery swap for electric 3-wheelers in Bengaluru by June: Report
- Japanese automaker Honda Motors will roll out its battery-swapping services for electric three-wheelers in Bengaluru from June this year. the company aims to analyse the market in India's tech capital before extending the service to other regions and the two-wheeler segment.
- The 2017 EV policy in India aims to draw Rs 31,000 crore in R&D and manufacturing investments. Several states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu have announced their state policies since then.
- A battery-swapping station is a place where a drained electric vehicle battery can be exchanged with a fully charged one. These stations act as battery aggregators, offering the infrastructure for charging a large number of batteries and making charged batteries available to EVs.

23010. Look who's riding electric bikes in Bengaluru
- Yulu co-founders, including its CEO Amit Gupta, had visualized their MMVs to “decongest the infamous Bengaluru traffic and improve its air quality” when they started the company in 2018; their intention was to change the mindset of the white-collar commuters who wouldn’t leave their cars for cycles.
- The first stand of rental bikes appeared in Bellandur, a neighbourhood with several special economic zones housing MNCs. The electric cycles were aimed at the professionals living in the vicinity.
- Yulu estimates that 17,000 gig workers have used their electric cycles in 2021. The company even designed an electric vehicle with a goods carrier that can carry about 10 kg load. And ever since the pandemic, Gupta told me the company’s journey has widened from ‘moving people’ to ‘moving goods’ for the last mile. “Using Yulu is expected to reduce the operating costs of delivery executives by almost 35-40%, increasing their earning potential.”
