2611. ISRO’s Space Programme: Timeline from 1960s to 2024
- On26 May, 1999, PSLV-C2 was the second operational launch of India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the fifth mission in the PSLV program.
- The PSLV-C2 mission was the first time ISRO launched three satellites in a single vehicle.
- The PSLV-C2 mission was also India's and ISRO's first commercial spaceflight.

2612. ISRO successfully tests scramjet engine using oxygen from atmosphere
- On 28 August, 2016, The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) on Sunday conducted a five-minute flight to test a scramjet engine - which takes atmospheric oxygen to burn engine fuel - developed at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota.
- During the experiment in SDSC, the scramjet engine, affixed to a two-stage RH-560 sounding rocket developed in the 1970s, was ignited at an altitude of 20 km and allowed to burn fuel for five seconds before the rocket falls into the Bay of Bengal.
- The scramjet engine would be tested about 55 seconds after take-off from the launchpad at SDSC. After the first stage of the rocket breaks off and falls into the Bay of Bengal, the rocket will continue moving up with available thrust.

2613. India Joins Rank of Countries With Space Observatory; ASTROSAT in Orbit
- On 28 September, 2015, India has become only the fourth country after the US, Russia and Japan, to have an eye scanning the exotic depths of the universe as of this morning.
- The ASTROSAT, the Indian Space Research Organisation's multi-wavelength space observatory, has been successfully placed in orbit - 22 minutes and 32 seconds after the PSLV-C30 lifted off from the first launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre
- Six satellites, four from the US, one from Indonesia and one from Canada, had piggybacked alongside the Rs 178 crore ASTROSAT.

2614. Sterlite Power Commissions 123-km Nangalbibra-Bongaigaon Transmission Line
- On February 17, 2025, Sterlite Power announced the successful commissioning of the Nangalbibra-Bongaigaon transmission line, an inter-state transmission system project spanning Assam and Meghalaya. The initiative aims to strengthen power infrastructure and ensure reliable electricity supply in Meghalaya.
- The project covers approximately 300 circuit kilometers (cktkm) and includes a greenfield substation with 300 MW transformation capacity in the challenging North-Eastern terrain. A key component is the 123 km, 400kV DC transmission line connecting Bongaigaon (Assam) to Nangalbibra (Meghalaya), ensuring improved energy distribution.
- The 220/132kV substation at Nangalbibra, equipped with 2x160 MVA transformation capacity, has been designed for future expansion to 400 kV to support growing electricity demand. Arun Sharma, CEO of Sterlite Power’s Infrastructure Business, stated that the project will help bridge existing power gaps, attract investments, create jobs, and drive infrastructure growth in the region.

2615. Tripura prioritises development of Kamalpur-Santirbazar road as national highway
- On February 17, 2025, the Tripura government announced that it is prioritising the development of the Kamalpur to Santirbazar Road as a National Highway (NH). Currently, Tripura has six national highways covering 923.31 km, with the Centre approving four more highways in principle. However, the state is pushing for the 148 km Kamalpur-Santirbazar route to receive NH status first.
- Chief Engineer of National Highways, P. Jamatia, highlighted that the proposed NH will improve connectivity across tribal habitations in Dhalai, Gomati, and South Tripura districts, significantly enhancing socio-economic opportunities. The route will also reduce Ambassa to Sabroom travel distance from 300 km to 200 km, passing through key tourist sites like Dumbur, Narikel Kunja, and Chhabimura.
- Sabroom has already been developed as a gateway to Southeast Asia, with the Maitri Setu, Integrated Check Post, and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) facilitating trade with Bangladesh’s Chittagong port (just 70 km away). The Tripura government is seeking ₹2,000 crore in funding from the Centre, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) expected within six months once approval is granted.

2616. Tripura electricity corporation-Agartala NIT ink pact aiming uninterrupted power supply
- On February 17, 2025, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NIT Agartala to enhance the state’s electricity distribution network, ensuring uninterrupted power supply for consumers. The agreement focuses on knowledge sharing, research collaboration, and strengthening industry-academia ties in the power sector.
- In 2021-22, 3,278 km of road length was completed, followed by 464 km in 2023, and 956 km in 2023-24, with 535 km sanctioned for the current year. The steady progress reflects the government’s strong commitment to infrastructure development in the region.
- The financial commitment to PMGSY in J&K has been substantial, with ₹1,328.34 crore released in 2021-22, ₹717 crore in 2022-23, and ₹1,304.17 crore in 2023-24. These investments have played a crucial role in expanding rural road networks, improving mobility, and boosting economic opportunities for local communities.

2617. Nagaland forest project awarded for enhancing forest ecosystems, income generation
- On February 17, 2025, the Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP) received the prestigious SKOCH Award for its efforts in improving forest ecosystems and supporting income generation. The award was accepted by Ango Konyak, Deputy Project Director of NFMP, and Wennyei Konyak, Resident Commissioner of Nagaland House, New Delhi, during the 100th SKOCH Summit.
- NFMP, running from 2017 to 2027, focuses on rehabilitating jhum (shifting cultivation) areas, promoting sustainable forest conservation, and enhancing livelihoods through village-specific interventions led by Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMCs). The project covers 185 villages across 11 districts, benefiting 22 forest ranges.
- The initiative will manage 79,096 hectares of forest area and establish 555 self-help groups (SHGs) to support livelihood generation. The recognition highlights Nagaland’s commitment to sustainable environmental conservation while ensuring economic benefits for local communities.

2618. HT THIS DAY: October 23, 2008 — Chandrayaan-1: India successfully launches first mission to the Moon
- On 23 October, 2008, Chandrayaan-1 was launched successfully from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota.
- The spacecraft was orbiting around the Moon at a height of 100 km from the lunar surface for chemical, mineralogical and photo-geologic mapping of the Moon.
- Chandrayaan-I is scheduled to reach its orbit 100 km from the Moon (about 3, 86,000 km from earth) on November 8, and drop the Moon Impact Probe, with the Indian tricolour painted, on it a week later.

2619. Satellite school
- On 20 September, 2004, The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) had its first operational flight launched EDUSAT, India's first educational satellite.
- The GSLV is designed to launch communication satellites and inject satellites weighing 2–2.5 tonnes into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
- . At the end of 17 minutes of flight, when the GSLV-FO1's third, upper cryogenic stage injected EDUSAT (Educational Satellite), built by ISRO Satellite Centre, into a perfect geo-synchronous transfer orbit, the Mission Control Room reverberated with applause.

2620. First signals from GSAT-1
- On April 18, 2001, The first signals from GSAT-1, which was blasted into space by GSLV-D1 from Sriharikota, indicated normal performance of the satellite, the Indian Space Research Organisation said in Bangalore.
- The satellite from the geo-synchronous transfer orbit to its final geo-stationary orbit at 36,000 km, using the on-board apogee motor and deployment of its appendages like solar array, solar sail and the antenna would be carried out in the coming days.
- The Master Control Facility of ISRO at Hassan, some 180 km from Bangalore, will take control of GSAT-1 at around 0230 hours IST on Thursday and the Liquid Apogee Motor on board would be fired five hours later to raise the orbit level, MCF director M Y S Prasad told PTI over the telephone from Hassan.
