41. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi inaugurates CBDC-based Food Subsidy Distribution programme in Puducherry
- On February 27, 2026 the Union Government launched the Central Bank Digital Currency-based Food Subsidy Distribution pilot under PMGKAY in Puducherry, introducing digital currency-based Direct Benefit Transfer for food subsidy distribution.
- Minister of New and Renewable Energy Govt of India inaugurated the initiative, implemented with the Government of Puducherry, RBI, PFMS, and Canara Bank, crediting RBI-issued CBDC tokens to beneficiaries’ digital wallets for exclusive purchase of entitled foodgrains.
- The scheme, piloted in Ahmedabad and Puducherry, will next expand to Chandigarh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli before nationwide rollout; it aims to ensure transparency and efficiency, while the government reports over 25 crore people lifted from multidimensional poverty in eleven years.

42. Gujarat Budget: ₹500 crore allocated to 'Wire-Free City Mission' for underground cabling in state
- On February 26, 2026, the Gujarat Government announced a ₹500 crore provision to convert overhead power lines into underground cable networks across Municipal Corporations and Municipalities under the Gujarat Wire Free City Mission.

44. India’s GDP grows 7.8% in December quarter, beats estimates; FY26 growth pegged at 7.6%

- Manufacturing grew 13.3%, services 9.5%, and agriculture 1.7%; exports rose 5.6%, imports 8.6%; private consumption increased 8.7%, investment 7.8%, while FY26 full-year GDP growth is projected at 7.6%, higher than FY25’s 7.1%.

45. India's First Underwater Road-Rail Tunnel Beneath Brahmaputra River In Assam Gets Central Panel Nod
- India is set to build its first-ever twin-tube underwater tunnel designed to carry both road traffic and trains, marking a significant leap in strategic infrastructure and connectivity in the Northeast.
- An inter-ministerial committee led by the Expenditure Secretary has given in-principle approval for the ambitious project across the Brahmaputra river in Assam, linking Gohpur and Numaligarh. Once operational, travel time between Gohpur and Numaligarh is expected to drop from the current six-and-a-half hours to about 30 minutes.
- The 15.8 km twin-tube tunnel will form the core of a larger 33.7 km project that also includes approach roads and a railway line. One of the tunnels will be dedicated to rail movement, featuring a single electrified track with ballastless design.
- Built approximately 32 metres below the river’s deepest bed level, the tunnel is envisioned as a critical strategic asset. The total estimated cost stands at around Rs 18,600 crore, to be jointly funded by the ministries of road transport, railways and defence.

- The Indian Railways has allocated Rs 11,486 crore for Assam and the North Eastern states, reflecting a fivefold increase compared to 2014.
- Indian Railways, a massive infrastructure push is underway in Assam and the Northeast with Rs 72,468 crore worth of railway projects currently in progress and surveys for new railway lines are being conducted to further expand the network, while rail connectivity to Bhutan from Kokrajhar to Gelephu (69 Km) is being planned.
- The Railways project has resumed, and works in Sikkim and Nagaland are also progressing at a fast rate, significantly improving regional and international connectivity.
- The launch of Vande Bharat Sleeper and Assam’s first Amrit Bharat Express services highlighted modernization. Safety upgrades, new tracks, flyovers, and Kavach implementation reflected an accelerated push toward faster, safer regional rail connectivity.

47. Sairang–Silchar rail link opens, CM Lalduhoma calls it Mizoram’s new economic gateway

48. Engineering goods exports up 10.4% in January,2026, crosses $100 billion mark in April-January Period of FY26
- On February 26, 2026, it was reported that India’s engineering goods exports rose 10.4% year-on-year to US$10.40 billion in January 2026, driven by strong growth in copper, iron & steel, and motor vehicle shipments.
- During April–January FY 2025-26, exports crossed US$100 billion for the first time, reaching US$101.13 billion despite a 6.8% decline in shipments to the US. Engineering goods exports to the UAE went up 42.4% in January 2026 to US$871.48 million. In the case of Saudi Arabia, exports were up 33.3% at US$518.58 million.
- Strong growth in markets like UAE, Saudi Arabia, Germany, UK, and China supported overall export expansion, with engineering goods contributing 28.5% to total merchandise exports in January 2026.
- Among the top 25 key markets for Indian engineering goods, shipments to as many as 19 countries recorded positive growth during Jan.,2026, while in the case of six countries, the growth was negative.

- The PoC focuses on interoperability with existing infrastructure, multimodal logistics integration, and sustainable freight movement using the electrified rail network. Future phases may enable network optimization and data-driven decision-making based on pilot insights.
