1941. India surpasses Germany to become world’s 3rd-largest producer of wind, solar energy
- On 9 may 2025 India is now the world’s third-largest producer of wind and solar energy, surpassing Germany, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, said on Friday, adding that the country’s solar power installed capacity reached 107.95 GW in April this year, from 82.64 GW in the same month last year, which is a 30.7 per cent growth.
- Also, the installed capacity of wind energy stood at 51.06 GW last month, from 46.16 GW in April 2024 — a 10.6 per cent growth. “Total renewable energy (non-fossil fuel) has reached 231.81 GW installed capacity in April, from 199.86 GW in April 2024 which is a 16 per cent annual increase,” the Union Minister informed.
- India is at the forefront of global energy transition and solar power alone has grown over 30 times in the last decade, as the country achieved renewable energy targets of 2030 eight years ahead of schedule. The country achieved its 2030 renewable energy target of 200 GW in 2022 itself — eight years ahead of schedule.
1942. Gadkari Unveils Rs 10 Lakh Crore Plan To Widen Two-Lane National Highways Into Four-Lane Roads
- On 8 May 2025 Union Minister announced a transformative plan to upgrade 25,000 to 30,000 km of two-lane highways into four-lane corridors in India.
- To make India a strong economic power, infrastructure is key... We have taken a decision to convert 25,000-30,000 km two-lane highways in the country into four lanes for Rs 8-10 lakh crore,” Gadkari stated at an event.
- The Minister of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) also declared that the government would actively promote the Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) model to raise capital for highway projects from Indian investors.

1943. Bengaluru-made ‘suicide drones’ make debut with Operation Sindoor
- In a major technological breakthrough for India's defense capabilities, suicide drones manufactured in Bengaluru made their operational debut during Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army's high-precision counter-terror mission launched On 7 May 2025.
- SkyStriker suicide drones designed to locate, acquire and strike operator-designated targets with a warhead,Sources confirmed to TOI that an unspecified number of these suicide drones were manufactured in an industrial estate in western Bengaluru as part of a joint venture involving Bengaluru-headquartered Alpha Design and Israel's Elbit Security Systems.
- SkyStriker is touted as a cost-effective loitering munition while being capable of long-range precision strikes. The drone improves performance, situational awareness and survivability by providing direct-fire aerial-precision capabilities to manoeuvrable troops and special forces.
1944. Cleantech Solar Powers up 80 MWp Anchor Open Access Solar PV Projects at 275 MWp Renewable Energy Park in Tamil Nadu
- On 8 May 2025 Cleantech Solar, a leading provider of renewable energy solutions to corporations in India and Southeast Asia, is delighted to announce the commissioning of its anchor open access solar PV projects totalling ~80 MWp for industrial customers at its state-of-the-art 275 MWp solar park in Tamil Nadu
- The is Cleantech Solar’sfifth renewable energy park in the state. Power generated from these projects is being procured by clients on a captive basis to meet their energy requirements for manufacturing operations.

1945. Bharat Mala Connects 32 of 33 Telangana Districts With 5200 Km Highways
- On 8 May 2025 , Union Minister announced that 32 out of 33 districts in the state are now connected by national highways under the Bharat Mala project.
- .The expansion has increased the total length of national highways in Telangana from 2,500 kilometres before 2014 to 5,200 kilometres at present.
- The government is also prioritising the expansion of the Hyderabad-Srisailam road and the six-lane widening of the Hyderabad-Vijayawada national highway, both of which are key to managing increasing traffic volumes and improving regional logistics efficiency.

1946. Cabinet Accepts Rs 22,864 Crore Greenfield High-Speed Corridor from Shillong to Silchar
- On May 7, 2025, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by PM, approved a Rs 22,864 crore greenfield high-speed corridor spanning 166.80 km from Mawlyngkhung, Meghalaya, to Panchgram, Assam, under the Hybrid Annuity Mode.
- Covering 144.80 km in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam, the corridor will enhance connectivity between Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar, reducing travel time and supporting Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam’s Barak Valley.
- Expected to handle 19,000–20,000 daily passenger car units in 2025, it will boost Meghalaya’s cement and coal sectors, tourism via airport access, and create 74 lakh direct and 93 lakh indirect man-days of employment.
- Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the project, with Rs 12,087 crore for construction and Rs 3,503 crore for land acquisition, will ease NH-06 congestion and connect key highways and towns for economic growth.

1947. Singtam-Dikchu Road Inaugurated by Rajnath Singh; Sikkim Minister Announces More Projects in North Sikkim
- On May 7, 2025, Defence Minister virtually inaugurated a 10 km Singtam-Dikchu road in Sikkim, part of 50 Border Roads Organisation (BRO) infrastructure projects marking BRO’s 66th Foundation Day.
- Sikkim’s Roads and Bridges Minister NB Dahal, present at the launch, announced the upcoming inauguration of three North Sikkim bridges—Sangkalang Bailey, Rishi Khola, and Dzo Jong—by late May to improve regional travel.
- Dahal assured that National Highway 10, under construction, will remain open with no closures exceeding one hour during the monsoon season, addressing connectivity concerns.
- Expressing gratitude to BRO and the central government, Dahal emphasized Sikkim’s commitment to enhancing road infrastructure and monitoring key projects in North Sikkim.

1948. Arunachal Achieves Milestone With Northeast India’s First Geothermal Well
- On May 6, 2025, the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) successfully drilled Northeast India’s first geothermal production well in Dirang, West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh, marking a milestone in clean energy development.
- The well, drilled after two years of surveys, targets medium-to-high enthalpy geothermal zones with temperatures up to 115°C, suitable for fruit drying, space heating, and storage systems to benefit remote communities.
- Collaborating with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, Icelandic firm Geotropy ehf, and Guwahati Boring Service, CESHS used precise geological mapping to minimize environmental impact, with support from the Ministry of Earth Sciences and Arunachal government.
- CESHS aims to make Dirang India’s first geothermal-powered town, with plans for deeper drilling and operational systems soon, setting a model for sustainable energy across the Himalayas, as stated by Director Tana Tage.

1949. Assam approves Rs 7,730 cr investment proposals from Advantage Assam 2.0
- On May 6, 2025, the Assam Cabinet approved Rs 7,730 crore in investment proposals from the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit held in February, aimed at positioning Assam as a key investment hub in Northeast India.
