1911. India to Upgrade 30,000 Km Highways with Rs 10 Trillion Plan
- On 15 May , 2025 The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced plans to convert twenty-five thousand to thirty thousand kilometres of two-lane highways into four-lane roads. With a proposed investment of Rs 10 trillion, the project is expected to enhance logistics, reduce travel time, and support long-term economic growth.
- The plan aims to complete road projects worth Rs five to six trillion annually, contributing to a seamless transportation corridor for trade and mobility. To fund the expansion, the government will adopt the Infrastructure Investment Trust model, pooling capital from domestic investors.
- Projects will be executed under multiple models: Build–Operate–Transfer, BOT (Annuity), Engineering, Procurement and Construction, and Hybrid Annuity. Under the revised BOT (Annuity) model, the government will collect tolls for up to fifteen years, compensating concessionaires on an annuity basis.

1912. ISRO's Aditya-L1 captures solar flare and plasma ejection, monitoring solar activity in near-ultraviolet light
- On 14 May 2025, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has recently made an historic discovery from its Aditya-L1 mission, which was launched to monitor the Sun. ISRO posted a video shot by the mission showing a solar flare and historic plasma ejection from the Sun.
- The discovery brings a much enhanced scale of data concerning solar activity, which will have bearing on predicting space weather events that influence Earth.
- ISRO's Aditya-L1 mission has added one more value to solar studies with its latest capture of a solar flare and plasma ejection. The milestone provides an unprecedented glimpse into the Sun's turbulent nature in near-ultraviolet light and provides new avenues for research on solar phenomena.
1913. DRDO develops high-pressure polymeric membrane for sea water desalination
- On 15 May , 2025 Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) announced that it has successfully developed indigenous nanoporous multilayered polymeric membrane for high-pressure sea water desalination.
- Defence Materials Stores and Research & Development Establishment (DMSRDE), the Kanpur-based laboratory of DRDO, developed the technology for desalination plant in Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships, based on their operational requirement to address the serious challenge of stability when exposed to chloride ions in saline water.
- The initial safety and performance trials of the polymeric membranes were found to be fully satisfactory. The final operational clearance will be given by ICG after 500 hrs of operational testing,

1915. Big Boost For Electronics, India Gets New Semiconductor Unit In UP
- On 14 May, 2025. it was reported that, In a significant development aimed at strengthening India’s domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister of India, had approved the establishment of a new semiconductor fabrication facility in Uttar Pradesh.
- This new plant is a joint venture between Indian IT giant HCL and global electronics maker Foxconn. Both companies will work together to set up the unit with a total investment of Rs 3,700 crore.
- The new plant will manufacture display driver chips used in various screen-based devices and is expected to process 20,000 wafers and produce around 36 million chips each month.

1916. India’s Major Ports Reach Record Highs in FY 2024-25, Strengthening Global Trade Position
- India’s Major Ports have achieved a historic performance milestone in fiscal year 2024-25, reflecting the robust expansion of the country’s maritime sector and its increasing importance in global trade. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported a significant increase in cargo throughput, infrastructural modernisation, operational efficiency, and private investment.
- The total cargo handled by Major Ports grew by 4.3% year-on-year, rising from 819 million tonnes in FY 2023-24 to an estimated 855 million tonnes in FY 2024-25. The growth was driven by substantial increases in container traffic (10%), fertiliser handling (13%), POL cargo (3%), and miscellaneous commodities (31%).
- India’s Major Ports are now positioned as globally competitive trade hubs, supported by continued investment in digitalisation, multimodal logistics, and sustainable infrastructure.

1917. India’s defence exports surge to record high of Rs 23,622 crore in FY25; 34-fold increase from 2013-14
- On 14 may, 2025. It was reported that, The Ministry of Defence (MoD) posted on X (formerly Twitter),On 13 May 2025. “India exports to around 80 countries aiming for ₹50,000 crore in exports by 2029, strengthening its global defence manufacturing footprint.” Compared to a revenue of Rs 686 crore in FY 2013-14, the FY 2024-25 number of Rs 23,622 crore is a 34 times increase
- In FY 2024-25, private sector contributions amounted to Rs 15,233 crore, whilst DPSUs generated Rs 8,389 crore in exports. These figures show an improvement from FY 2023-24, when private sector exports stood at Rs 15,209 crore and DPSU exports at Rs 5,874 crore.
- The department issued 1,762 Export Authorisations in FY 2024-25, showing an increase from 1,507 in the previous year, marking a 16.92% rise. Additionally, the number of defence exporters increased by 17.4% during this period.

- On 13 may 2025, It was reported that, Goa Tourism had reported a robust 10.5% year-on-year growth in tourist arrivals for Q1 2025, registering 28,51,554 visitors, up from 25,80,155 in Q1 2024.

1920. Initial India-Australia agricultural trade data shows that FTA has helped farmers
- On 13 May 2025 , While reciprocal tariffs announced by the US have upended the global trade, it is to the credit of the Government of India that it has been able to finalise the free trade agreement with the UK in just about four years of negotiations.
- India is currently negotiating FTAs, with the European Union, Peru, Sri Lanka and Oman. India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) is also under negotiation. Existing FTAs like India-South Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA).
- The bilateral trade between India and Australia has more than doubled, increasing from $12.2 billion in 2020-21 to $24.1 billion in 2023-24. In 2023-24 India's goods exports were worth $7.94 billion and imports were $16.15 billion.
