1951. IMF sees India as 4th largest economy replacing Japan
- On ^6 May 2025 , India is poised to become the world’s fourth-largest economy in 2025 with the country’s nominal GDP rising to $4,187.017 billion during the year to surpass Japan’s GDP pegged at $4,186.431 billion, according to the IMF’s World Economic Outlook report.
- India continues to remain the world’s fastest growing major economy and the only country expected to clock over 6 per cent growth in the next two years.
- The high rate of growth will see India’s GDP increasing to $5,584.476 billion in 2028 as it overtakes Germany to become the third largest economy.

1952. NLC India Renewables signs Power Purchase Agreement with RVUNL for solar power project in Rajasthan
- On 7 May, 2025, it was reported that, NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Ltd. (NLCIL), had signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) for an 810 MW solar power project at the Pugal Solar Park in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
- The project, developed under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s UMREPP scheme, marks a significant step in NLCIL’s renewable energy journey and is expected to generate 2 billion units of green electricity annually, offsetting around 1.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 emissions.
- The project boosts NLCIL’s clean energy leadership and supports its 10 GW renewable target by 2030, with more projects planned in Rajasthan through joint ventures.
1953. DRDO Conducts Maiden Flight-Trial of Stratospheric Airship
- On 7 May 2025 , The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the maiden flight-trial of the Stratospheric Airship Platform from Sheopur in Madhya Pradesh. Developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment in Agra, the airship ascended to nearly seventeen kilometres, carrying an instrumental payload.
- The sixty-two-minute flight tested onboard systems such as envelope pressure control and emergency deflation, which performed as intended. Data from the sensors will help build advanced simulation models for future missions. The system was safely recovered for further analysis.
- The new platform marks a step forward in India’s indigenous defence technology and high-altitude surveillance capabilities. It will contribute to earth observation and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations, placing India among a select group of countries with such strategic assets.
1954. Cabinet approves Rs 11,829-cr expansion of five IITs, 6,576 new seats added
- The Union Cabinet on 7 May 2025, approved the expansion of academic and infrastructure capacity in five new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), adding over 6,500 new seats over the next four years.
- This includes expansion of campus infrastructure in third-generation IITs set up after 2014 at Bhilai, Dharwad, Jammu, Palakkad and Tirupati, at a total cost of ₹11,829 crore from financial year 2025–26 (FY26) to FY29.
- The Cabinet also approved the creation of 130 faculty posts, at the level of Professor (Level 14 and above), in the five IITs.
1955. ReNew Receives $100 Million Investment From BII To Enhance Solar Manufacturing In India
- On 7 May, 2025 It was reported that, ReNew Energy Global Plc (ReNew), a leading company in decarbonization solutions, had secured a \$100 million (INR 8700 million) investment from British International Investment (BII), the UK’s development finance institution and impact investor.
- The marks BII’s first investment in solar manufacturing in India, highlighting its commitment to strengthening the country’s renewable energy supply chain, especially in one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets.
- The partnership between BII and ReNew is in line with both organizations’ shared goal of advancing India’s renewable energy sector and contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change.
1956. Arunachal gets Rs 8 crore Khelo India facility in Kamle with training facilities
- On May 5, 2025, Sports Minister inaugurated a Rs 8 crore multi-purpose sports hall in Kamle district, Arunachal Pradesh, funded by the Central government to boost grassroots sports.
- The facility, equipped for sports like boxing, badminton, judo, and volleyball, aims to provide professional training for young athletes to compete nationally and internationally.
- Sports Minister emphasized Arunachal’s sports potential, encouraging local youth to utilize the hall to excel and contribute to nation-building through fitness and discipline.

1957. Sikkim set for tourism boost as Centre mulls new airport
- On May 5, 2025, Union Minister announced plans for a new airport in Sikkim to enhance tourism, during a press conference on a two-day state visit.
- The state BJP has long demanded an all-weather international airport, as the existing Pakyong airport frequently faces closures due to low visibility issues.
- The proposed airport aims to improve connectivity, support Sikkim’s tourism sector, and contribute to the state’s overall socio-economic growth.

1958. Belagavi start-up launches AI-based agriculture app SBOF Agrosmart
- On 6 May 2025, It was reported that, Belagavi-based SBOF Agrosmart Private Limited had launched SBOF Agrosmart, which is being billed a India’s first AI-based all-in-one agriculture app. It will provide all-round support to farmers and could lead to a revolution in agriculture, according to start-up founders Savio Pereira and Swati Pereira.
- Farmers across India are facing increasing uncertainty — climate change, market price fluctuations, pest & disease outbreaks, lack of timely information, low-quality inputs, and difficulty accessing government schemes and modern tools.
- PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi launched the app in Belagavi in the presence of MLA Asif (Raju) Sait, BUDA Chairman Laxmanrao Chingale, DCC Bank President Appasaheb Kulgode, former minister Veerakumar Patil, former MLAs Sham Bheem Ghatge, Arvind Patil, and Kakasaheb Patil.
1959. Centre Approves 501 Wayside Amenities To Boost Highway Infrastructure, Gujarat To Get 56 Facilities: Gadkari
- On 6 May 2025, It was reported that, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways informed the Rajya Sabha that the Central Government has approved the development of 501 Wayside Amenities (WSAs) across national highways and expressways. Of these, 56 will be located in Gujarat
- Minister stated, 94 are currently operational, adding that the government intends to expand the network to over 700 WSAs by 2028-29. In Gujarat, nine of the 56 approved sites are already functional, promising a major boost to the state's transport ecosystem.
- WSAs are designed to provide travellers with essential services including clean restrooms, parking, EV charging stations, hygienic food options, and basic medical aid. They will be established at 40 to 60 km intervals along key highway stretches, ensuring consistent access to amenities.

1960. UPI QR Codes Record 91.5 Per Cent Surge To 657.9 Million
- On 6 May 2025 , UPI QR codes have recorded the fastest growth in digital payments infrastructure in the financial year 2024-25, with a 91.5 per cent jump over the previous financial year to 657.9 million, according to the latest RBI data
- The surge in UPI QR codes was accompanied by a slowdown in the growth rate of credit card transactions to 7.94 per cent year-on-year, while debit card additions registered a mere 2.7 per cent growth to 991 million.
- The growth in the number of UPI QR codes has been accelerating with the increasing deployment by platforms like Google Pay, Paytm, and PhonePe. The number of banks going live on UPI continues to increase, and the total touched 668 in April, which is expected to increase the value of such transactions, according to bank officials.
