23001. DRDO’s COVID-19 drug: BDR Pharma inks license agreement with DRDO to produce 2-DG
- BDR Pharma has inked a pact with the Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE) and the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) of the DRDO for manufacturing, distribution, and marketing of 2-DG in the country.
- The Mumbai-based company noted that it has already applied to the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for restricted emergency use authorisation to manufacture Drug 2-DG to treat COVID-19 patients in India.
- For the development of 2-DG drugs, the DRDO has recently signed agreements with four major Indian generic medicine producers.

- With health experts cautioning that the country is likely to face the third spell of Covid-19, around 1,500 oxygen plants that can each produce 1,000 litres of liquid medical oxygen are being set up across India
- The DRDO chairman G Sateesh Reddy said only 47,000 PPE were produced in the country before Covid. However, since the outbreak their production has crossed six lakh units per day.
- The technology was given to industries by DRDO for mass production of PPE in the country.

23004. 50% Adults In India Have Got At Least One Vaccine Dose
- India has completed administering one dose of Covid vaccine to at least 50 per cent of its adult population
- Health Minister Mansukh Manviya said a significant number of people in India have protection against the virus.

- Himachal becoming the first state to vaccinate 100% of the eligible population with the first dose, it has inoculated one-third of its population with the second dose. Modi said India was creating records by administering 1.25 crore doses daily, which was much higher than the entire population of some countries.
- Lauding the spirit of the state’s health workers, ASHA, angawad, teachers and other people involved in the combat against Covid-19, Modi appreciated the contribution of women to the vaccination campaign.

23006. Trials for drone vaccine deliveries to start from 9 September
- India’s first pilot programme involving drones to deliver covid-19 vaccines is expected to take off soon in Telangana. The drone trials for delivery of medicines and vaccines, under the Medicine from the Sky project, will be held in Vikarabad, Hyderabad, from 9 September to 17 October.
- Blue Dart Express and its drone delivery partner Skye Air Mobility will fly the first drone flight under the Medicine in the Sky trials, Sky Air Mobility said in a statement There are about eight consortia carrying out trials for the Medicine from the Sky project, including Dunzo and Flipkart.
- The launch of the pilot project has been been delayed by several months due to covid-19 induced lockdowns and delays in regulatory clearances The use of drones will be mostly for emergencies and will be deployed in difficult-to-reach hilly regions such as in northeast India, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, where transport of medicine and vaccines becomes difficult, especially during the monsoons.

23008. 3 desi firms to make Covid-19 protective gear for doctors, health workers
- The government has roped in three local manufacturers who can produce around 20,000 pieces of this personal protective equipment per week expecting a shortage of disposable body coveralls, 3-ply surgical and N-95 masks for doctors and health workers battling the Covid-19 outbreak.
- India, which used to meet its annual demand of around 1 lakh pieces for these medical textiles through imports from China, the US, Germany and Switzerland, now pegs its requirement at around 50-60 lakh pieces in the next two months.
- While the textiles ministry has on-boarded Vadodara-based Sure Safety, Bengaluru’s Amaryllis Healthcare and Gurugram-based Sai Synergy LLP, it has also reached out to other domestic players for these products,

23009. Defence ministry ropes in DRDO, OFB to manufacture essential medical equipments
- The defence ministry is stepping up efforts to combat the Covid-19 crisis, with its public sector units and the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) being roped in to manufacture essential medical equipment on a war footing.
- (DRDO) has commenced manufacturing of sanitisers at its laboratories throughout the nation, the OFB, which makes guns, ammunition and clothing for the armed forces, has started a pilot project to produce personal protection equipment.
- DRDO is also in touch with private sector manufacturers to scale up production of much needed ventilators on a war footing. “We have supplied almost 15,000 bottles of the sanitiser formulation for distribution to other organisations. Efforts are on to produce it on a large scale,” a DRDO official said

23010. Health Ministry asks over 10 domestic manufactures to produce PPE
- Over 10 domestic manufacturers in India have been asked to produce Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the Health Ministry said on Sunday.
- Apart from this, the government has decided to import the Personal Protective Equipment from other countries.
- "WHO guidelines were understood and taking into account details of this virus, the PPE guidelines were suitably amended. Over 10 domestic manufacturers in India were identified for the purpose. They have started production also," he told reporters.
