23541. Maldives' foreign minister receives made in India vaccine
- India has supplied to the Maldives 100,000 doses of CoviShield (Oxford-Astra Zeneca vaccine) manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute of India.
- Shahid shared a video in which he is being administered with the first of the two vaccine shots. His Tweet reads, "Today I received the #COVID19 vaccine. Govt of Maldives begins #COVID19 vaccination for all in #Maldives with no discrimination based on nationality.
- India launched the Vaccine Maitri initiative on January 20 to gift COVID-19 vaccines to other countries. Earlier, India supplied corona vaccines to neighbouring countries Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh under the Neighbourhood First policy.

23542. Kuwait, Oman get Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccines produced in India
- Kuwait's Ministry of Health (MOH) announced that 200,000 doses of the vaccine manufactured at the Serum Institute of India (SII) arrived in the country at dawn.
- On Sunday, Oman received 100,000 doses of the Oxford Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from India.
- In a press statement carried by the Kuwait News Agency, assistant undersecretary at Kuwait’s drug and food control affairs Dr. Abdullah Al-Bader has said that the ministry is closely monitoring international developments concerning the vaccines, adding that the department would cooperate with various producing companies to get the jabs after ensuring their safety and efficacy.

23544. ‘Vaccine wars’ between the EU and the UK to affect India
- An EU jab shortage will put pressure on India to make up the difference
- The EU has told the UK that if AstraZeneca cannot supply the contracted number of doses from its plants in Europe, it is duty bound to meet the shortfall from its manufacturing facilities in Britain.
- WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said “vaccine nationalism” could lead to a “protracted recovery”. He added that vaccine hoarding would “keep the pandemic burning and... slow global economic recovery” in addition to being a “catastrophic moral failure” that could further widen global inequality.

- British-Swedish firm AstraZeneca, which co-developed the Covid-19 vaccine with Oxford University has found itself entangled in a mess that also involves Brexit.
- AstraZeneca said it can only deliver a fraction of its vaccine doses promised to the EU and Britain because of production problems, but both sides are demanding their pledges are met.

23546. India May Become The First Buyer Of S-500 Anti-Aircraft Missile System: Russian Deputy PM Borisov
- Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov has indicated that India may be the first foreign buyer of its most advanced S-500 ‘Prometei’ anti-aircraft missile system.
- The S-500 ‘Prometei’ anti-aircraft missile system is the most advanced Russian mobile service to air system and was put into service earlier this year. In 2019, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed interest in buying the S-500 units.
- The $5.5 billion deal for five S-400 systems had become a thorn in the growing US-India partnership, with the latter running the risk of facing the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) sanctions.

23548. Tata doubles down on beauty business as startups blaze the trail
- Indian conglomerate Tata Group plans to reclaim ground in the beauty business it exited 23 years ago, with the local market for cosmetics forecast to be worth $20 billion by 2025.
- The startup, that’s now a $13 billion company after a blockbuster IPO, helped millennial and Gen-Z consumers buy high-end beauty brands as well as access tutorials and testimonials from social media influencers.
- The revenue from beauty, footwear and underwear category is just about $100 million for Trent while the market is of about $30 billion now, according to data provided by the company.

23550. 1.25 lakh kilometers of roads will be constructed under third phase of PMGSY, Rural Development Minister tells Lok Sabha
- under the third phase of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) 1.25 lakh kilometers of road will be constructed in the country
- the third phase of PMGSY was launched in 2019 to connect major rural links connecting habitations to rural agriculture markets, schools and hospitals.
- Giriraj Singh a total of 71,902 km road length has been sanctioned till 8th December this year and out of which more than 19000 km road length has been completed. The minister said all the state governments have been advised to use at least 15 percent of green technology in construction of such roads.
