921. Coal India signs pact with IRCON International for rail infrastructure development
- On October 8, 2025, State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) ) and state-owned engineering and construction firm IRCON International Ltd have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Kolkata to develop rail infrastructure for CIL and its subsidiaries jointly.
- Coal India reported a 20.1% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit for the June quarter at ₹8,734 crore, compared to ₹10,934 crore a year ago. . However, the numbers beat CNBC-TV18 estimates, which had pegged profit at ₹8,005 crore.
- Revenue from operations for the first quarter stood at ₹35,842 crore, down 4.4% from ₹37,503 crore last year, but ahead of the poll estimate of ₹34,990 crore.

923. NHAI Builds Chhattisgarh’s First Highway Tunnel In Just 12 Months
- On October 8, 2025, Chhattisgarh has achieved a new milestone with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) completing the state’s first national highway tunnel under the Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor.
- The 2.79 km stretch, built through the hilly terrain between Kanker and Kondagaon districts, was completed in only 12 months. The tunnel is part of the NH-130CD project, which aims to connect Raipur in Chhattisgarh with Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh through a 464 km six-lane highway.
- Officials said the left-hand side tunnel will open to vehicles by March–April 2026. The right-hand side tunnel will be operational by July–August 2026

924. UPI reaches 500 million consumers, 65 million merchants, says report
- On October 8, 2025, With over 500 million consumers and 65 million merchants, unified payments interface (UPI) has evolved from a digital payment platform into a daily habit, driving financial inclusion, enabling access to credit, and fuelling growth for micro and small enterprises across India, according to a report released here.
- The report, launched at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2025 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), highlights how India’s UPI has set a new global benchmark, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of global real-time payment volumes and 84 per cent of all retail digital payments within the country.
- UPI’s presence now spans 99 per cent of India’s more than 19,000 pin codes, catalysing economic momentum nationwide.

925. Revolut launches India service incorporating UPI
- On October 8, 2025, UK-based Revolut, which provides banking and cross-border payment services, has unveiled its India launch at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF 2025). The company aims to onboard 20 million Indian customers by 2030.
- The first set of Revolut cards in the country will operate on the Visa network. The platform integrates UPI, domestic prepaid Visa cards, and multi-currency international Visa cards, providing a single app for payments at home and abroad.

926. NPCI launches biometric, wearable glass authentication for UPI payments
- On October 7, 2025, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Reserve Bank of India launched a series of initiatives including biometric and wearable glass recognition-based authentication for UPI transactions at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 in Mumbai.
- The new feature allows users to authenticate UPI payments using their face or biometrics, stored in Aadhar, a move that could eventually replace the traditional four- or six-digit UPI PIN.
- Another innovation unveiled at the event was a UPI Lite feature for wearable smart glasses, designed to make small-value transactions completely hands-free. Users can simply give a voice command to their smart glasses to authenticate and complete payments — no phone, PIN, or touch required. All it takes is a quick QR code scan.
- NPCI also announced the launch of multi-signatory accounts on UPI, a feature that allows joint account holders to make payments that require approval from one or more signatories.

- The 10,500 sqkm that it covers was declared protected and named the Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve by the Centre in 1989.
- It is also part of Unesco's The Man and the Biosphere Programme. The core area of 560 sqkm was declared as the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park by the Tamil Nadu government in 1986.

929. DRDO releases the Indian Radio Software Architecture standard 1.0 to enable interoperability in Military Communication
- On October 7, 2025, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and the Tri-Services, formally released Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA) standard 1.0 to enable interoperability in Military Communication, during the National workshop organised at DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi.
- IRSA is a comprehensive software specification for Software Defined Radios (SDR), defining standardized interfaces, APIs, execution environments, and waveform portability mechanisms.
- The launch of IRSA represents a defining step in India’s journey toward self-reliance in defence communication technologies, embodying the vision of building indigenous, inter-operable, and future-ready SDR solutions — designed in India, for India and ready for the world.
930. India’s defence exports soar 34 times in 11 years under Atmanirbhar push
- India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission has transformed the defence sector, propelling the country from a major importer to a confident exporter of military technology. Defence exports have soared 34 times in the past eleven years — from just ₹6.8 billion in FY14 to a record ₹236.2 billion in FY25, a year-on-year increase of 12 per cent.
- The strong performance in FY25 was led by both the Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and the private sector. The private sector contributed 64.5% (₹152.3 billion) of total exports, while DPSUs accounted for ₹83.9 billion.
- Hyderabad-based Astra Microwave Products has emerged as a leader in defence, aerospace, and radar electronics. In Q1FY26, defence contributed 86.4% of its revenue, with exports at 10%, a figure it aims to triple to 30% over the next three years.
