23091. COVID vaccine delivery through drones starts in Northeast
- Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched an initiative to facilitate COVID-19 vaccine delivery. "This is for the first time that a "Make in India' drone has been used in South Asia to transport COVID-19 vaccine
- "We can use drones in delivering important life-saving medicines, collecting blood samples. This technology can also be used in critical situations. Incorporating such drone technologies into the national programmes would help deliver other vaccines and medical supplies as quickly as possible."
- Drone has been designed to overcome these challenges by deploying Unmanned Aerial vehicles (UAV) / drones to remote areas, the health ministry said. The ICMR conducted an initial study in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur to test the capacity of drones to carry and transfer vaccines safely
23092. Bangladesh asks India to resume onion exports, upset over breach of ‘unwritten understanding’
- Addressing a press conference in Dhaka Wednesday, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs M. Shahriar Alam said India and Bangladesh have an “unwritten understanding” that New Delhi will inform Dhaka prior to imposing any kind of ban on the export of the commodity, which is a key cooking ingredient in the local markets.
- “We are expecting a positive result soon in this regard, Dhaka has requested New Delhi to revoke its ban on onion export as India earlier had made an unofficial pledge to Bangladesh of a continuing supply of onion here,” he said.
- Dhaka is upset as the “friendly” neighbours have an understanding that New Delhi will inform beforehand about such a move in order for Bangladesh to take necessary action, sources in the Bangladesh government said. This understanding was reached after India took a similar action last year, said the sources.

23093. Centre Conducted Surgical Strike On Farmers By Banning Onion Export: NCP
- The Centre banned export of all varieties of onions with immediate effect, a move aimed at increasing availability and curbing its prices in the domestic market.
- Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson Mahesh Tapase termed the decision as Tughlaqi ((ill thought out) as it deprived onion growers of a good price for their produce at a time when there was an increasing demand for the commodity in the international market.
- Mahesh Tapase claimed that owing to the coronavirus pandemic, onion export has come down by 13 per cent, aggregating a business loss of around.Since the business has come to a halt, farmers naturally have found themselves in trouble. Hence, PM Modi and Piyush Goyal should withdraw the decision, he added.

23094. To check prices, Centre to import 10 lakh tonnes of potato Piyush Goyal
- The “Normally, potatoes are imported at 30 per cent import duty. But it is decided to allow the import of 10 lakh tonnes of potatoes at 10 per cent duty till January 31. We are also getting 30,000 tonnes of potato from Bhutan,” said Goyal.
- “The onion imports are being done by market forces. The government is not importing it directly. NAFED plans to invite people to import... to ensure adequate supply,” he said. The Centre has extended the deadline for importing arhar dal till December 31. Similarly, licences have been issued for importing 1.5 lakh tonnes of urad dal. Also, the import duty on masoor dal will remain at 10 per cent till December 31, Goyal said
- The government has also decided to extend the bilateral treaty with Mozambique for importing 2 lakh tonnes of tur dal which ends this year for another five years. Similarly, it would sign a contract with Myanmar for importing 2.5 lakh tonnes urad dal annually for the next five years.

23095. 7,000 tonnes onion imported, 25,000 tonnes likely to arrive before Deepavali, says Piyush Goyal
- The central cooperative NAFED will soon begin importing onions in a bid to tame soaring prices, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday
- Although NAFED had created a buffer stock of 1 lakh tonnes from the rabi crop, from which it has been releasing stock into retail markets directly and through State governments, it has already disposed of 40%, and another 25% is expected to be lost to damp and rot.
- With regard to NAFED’s scheme to procure apples from Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Goyal claimed that the scheme had managed to reach only 1% of its 13 lakh tonne target last year because “J&K farmers had got a better price in the market, so they had no need for procurement”.

- भूटान से आएगा 30 हजार टन आलू कोल्ड स्टोरेज में कम आलू के कारण बढ़ी कीमतें भूटान से आएगा 30 हजार टन आलू इसके अलावा सरकार ने इस पर ड्यूटी भी कम कर दिया है.
- पहले आलू पर 30 फीसदी की ड्यूटी लगती थी जिसे घटाकर 10 फीसदी कर दिया गया है जिसे अगले साल 31 जनवरी तक 10 लाख टन स्टॉक के लिए तय किया गया है
- टर्की, इजिप्ट और अफगानिस्तान से आएगा प्याज 7 हजार टन प्याज आ चुका है और इसके बाद 25 हजार टन दिवाली से पहले आ सकता है. प्याज का आयात टर्की, इजिप्ट और अफगानिस्तान से किया जाएगा. हालांकि उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार इस आयात की खरीदारी में सीधे शामिल नहीं होगी

23097. India’s RBD palmolein imports seen subdued till April as normality yet to return to hotel sector
- Besides lower offtake due to Coronavirus by the hotel, restaurant and catering segment, which makes good use of palm group of oils, imports were affected by a couple of initiatives taken by the Modi government Edible oils import, most of which is used for cooking, dropped to a five-year low last season (November 2019-October 2020) to 13.52 million tonnes as the HoReCa sector was affected by the lockdown announced by the Indian government to tackle COVID-19
- Edible oil imports are among the top five commodities that account for a heavy outflow of precious foreign exchange from India. Over Rs 75,000 crore is being spent annually on these imports over the last couple of years. One of the features of last season’s lower edible oil imports is the drastic decline in shipments of RBD (refined, bleached and deodorised) palmolein into the country.
- RBD palmolein imports plunged to 0.42 million tonnes last season from 2.73 million tonnes the previous season. India discouraged imports of palm oil from Malaysia, one of the major producers, due to souring of bilateral relations during the Mahathir Mohamad regime and cracked down on imports from Nepal, which hardly produces any palm oil.

23098. प्याज की कीमतों पर काबू पाने के लिए Maharashtra ने इस देश से मंगाया प्याज
- महाराष्ट्र (Maharashtra) में प्याज के दाम अगले कुछ दिनों में कम हो सकते हैं. तुर्किस्तान (Turkistan) से आयात किया गया प्याज (onion) महाराष्ट्र में पहुंचना शुरू हो गया है.
- जानकारी के मुताबिक महाराष्ट्र की पिपलगाव बाजार मंडी में तुर्किस्तान से करीब 1000 क्विंटल प्याज लाया गया है. इस प्याज को बाजार में 3000-5000 रूपये प्रति क्विंटल के भाव से बेचा गया. बाजार में कुछ दिनों पहले तक यही प्याज 5000 से 7000 रुपये प्रति क्विंटल के हिसाब से थोक मार्केट में बेचा गया था.
- विदेशों से आयात हुई यह प्याज महाराष्ट्र की थोक मंडी में पहुंचनी शुरू हो गई है. जिससे वहां प्याज के दाम नीचे आने शुरू हो गए हैं. माना जा रहा है कि अगले कुछ दिनों में प्याज के दाम घटकर 30-40 रुपये प्रति किलो तक आ सकते हैं. हालांकि थोक के एक व्यापारी ने कहा कि भारतीय प्याज में जो टेस्ट होता है. वह इन विदेशी प्याजों में नहीं होता. ऐसे में लोगों को एक महीने और इंतजार करना होगा. तब तक नई भारतीय प्याज बाजार में आनी शुरू हो जाएगी.

23099. Government extends relaxed norms for onion imports till January 31 to counter high market
- Central government, extended relaxation norms for onion imports till January 31 next year to counter high market.
- "In the light of public concern over high prices of onion in the market, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has decided to extend the relaxation from the condition of fumigation and additional declaration on Phytosanitary Certificate as per the Plant Quarantine Order, 2003, for imports up to 31st January, 2021. The relaxation will be subject to certain conditions," a Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare release said
- On the rising onion prices, in October, the Food Minister Piyush Goyal had said that the government has banned the export of onions since September 14. He announced that the government had in turn, begun importing onions. The Centre is now taking steps to monitor potato prices.

23100. Govt to lift export ban on all varieties of onions starting January 1
- Government had made amendments in the export policy for onions in order to allow the export of up to 10,000 tonnes of two types of onions up to March 31, 2021.
- Union government on Monday has given consent to export of all types of onions from January 1, 2021.
- DGFT vide Notification No. 39 dated 09.10.2020 has allowed export of Bangalore Rose Onions and Krishnapuram onions for quantity up to 10,000 MT each." As per the notification, exports of the two varieties of onions is allowed now but only for a limited quantity. Also, the export of these varieties of onions is allowed only from Chennai port.
