23971. India provided 15 tonnes of medical supplies worth Rs 2.11 crore to coronavirus-hit China: Government
- India provided 15 tonnes of medical supplies to coronavirus-hit China comprising masks, gloves and other emergency medical equipment at a cost of about Rs 2.11 crore, the government informed the Lok Sabha.
- Medical supplies included one lakh surgical masks, five lakh pairs of surgical gloves, 75 pieces of infusion pumps, 30 pieces of enteral feeding pumps, 21 pieces of defibrillator and 4,000 pieces of N-95 masks.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi had written to Chinese President Xi Jinping on February 8, 2020, in view of the coronavirus outbreak in China, conveying the solidarity of the Indian government and its people with the neighbouring nation and the readiness to provide assistance.
- These supplies were delivered by an Indian Air Force C-17 special flight which landed in Wuhan, China on February 26, 2020.
23972. Railways introduces first-ever 'Pod' retiring rooms for travellers; check out what they are
- Railways' ticketing, catering, and tourism arm IRCTC has introduced a new service by commissioning POD concept Retiring Rooms at Mumbai Central Railway Station in association with Urban Pod Pvt Ltd, Mumbai.
- It will have a Pod inventory of 48, comprising three categories, namely 30 Classic Pods, 7 Ladies only, 10 Private Pods and one for Differently Abled.
- A capsule hotel, also popularly known as a Pod hotel, was first developed in Japan, featuring small bed-sized rooms known as capsules. Pod hotels provide affordable, basic overnight accommodation for guests who do not require or who can't afford larger, more expensive rooms offered by the conventional hotels.
23973. India extends Covid assistance worth $ 1 million under SAARC emergency fund
- The supplies were coordinated by respective Indian Embassies under the guidance of Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla following consultations with local governments. For Maldives, India supplied 317 cartons weighing over 5.5 tonnes of essential medicines were supplied,
- A Rapid Response Team with testing equipment will be sent to Nepal. India has made medical supply to Bhutan consisting of Surgical Masks, Shoe covers Hand Disinfectant/ Hand Sanitizers, Digital Thermometers, Forehead sensor, Disposable Gloves, Disposable surgical caps, Surgical hoods, Gowns, Fumigation system, Glycerin (450 ml), Glutaraldehyde solution (5L), Coveralls, Safety goggles & medicines.
- With regard to Afghanistan medical supply consisting of surgical masks, gloves & sodium hydrochloride solution (disinfectant) is being provided. For Bangladesh and Sri Lanka India is extending supply consisting of surgical masks, shoe covers, hand disinfectant/ hand sanitizers, disposable gloves and disposable surgical caps.
23974. India shares measures with Indo-Pacific region states to combat Covid-19
- Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Friday participated in a telephonic conference call initiated by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun for discussions among some countries in the Indo-Pacific region on issues related to countering COVID-19.
- The teleconference included senior representatives from Australia, the Republic of Korea, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Japan.
- The participants are expected to continue the conference call on a weekly basis, covering issues like cooperation on vaccine development, challenges of stranded citizens, assistance to countries in need and mitigating the impact on the global economy, etc..
23975. India gifts a 10-tonne consignment of medicines to Sri Lanka
- India gifted a 10 tonne consignment of essential life saving medicines to Government of Sri Lanka, in view of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
- India also pledged US$ 10 million to the SAARC COVID-19 Emergency Fund. Subsequently, a Video Conference of health professionals in SAARC countries was held on 26 March 2020.
- Ministry of Health of India has also started offering online training sessions for health professionals in SAARC countries.

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally hand over Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) designed Advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) system 'Shakti' for Naval ships to the Indian Navy at a ceremony in Jhansi
- Advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) System 'Shakti' has been designed and developed by Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL) Hyderabad a laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for Capital Warships of the Indian Navy for the interception, detection, classification, identification and jamming of conventional and modern Radars.
- The Shakti EW system will provide an electronic layer of defence against modern radars and anti-ship missiles to ensure electronic dominance and survivability in the maritime battlefield.

- KR Vijayan, the owner of 'Sree Balaji Coffee House' in Kerala's Kochi, who became an inspiration for many to pursue their travel dreams has passed away at the age of 71.
- Vijayan and his wife Mohana, known as Kerala's traveling couple had made headlines for their trips around the world, funded by the savings from their small tea stall in Gandhinagar. Vijayan and Mohana who had been married for more than 40 years had visited 26 countries together, with their last trip to Russia, in October.

23978. Materials used in experimental drugs against virus arrive in Israel from India
- A plane from India carrying materials used to make medicines for treating coronavirus patients has arrived in Israel.
- The five ton shipment, which the Ynet news site said arrived Tuesday, includes ingredients for the drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, which are used to treat malaria.Several countries have been experimenting with hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus symptoms and US President Donald Trump has touted its potential.

- As India and Russia continue their strategic partnership in the all crucial defence sector, the latter has offered the former "new areas of work", including developing new armoured vehicles based on the T-14 Armata tank platform together.
- T-14 Armata is Russia's T-14 Armata main battle tank designed by Uralvagonzavod. It was first displayed in public during rehearsals for the 2015 Moscow Victory Day Parade.
- It is armed with a 125-mm new generation tank gun with a prospective ammunition load and a digital fire control system. Also, the T-14 is equipped with the most modern onboard complexes. The crew members' workplaces are equipped with video devices with touch-sensitive controls.

23980. Bajaj’s new EV production unit to start by June 2022 in India
- The whole R&D department of Bajaj will now be focused on developing future technologies for EVs. However, as Rajiv Bajaj’s statement mentions in the release, there’s one state-of-the-art ICE platform under development, which is certainly the result of the Bajaj-Triumph collaboration.
- The Chakan-based two-wheeler manufacturer is investing Rs 300 crore on this project. Spread over half a million square feet area, it will have an annual capacity to churn out as many as 500,000 electric vehicles per annum.
