10601. ‘Alpine girl’ from Bengaluru treks to 50 high-altitude lakes in Kashmir
- Braving arthritis, a Bengaluru woman created a record of sorts by trekking to 50 high-altitude lakes, located about 10,000 feet above sea level, in Kashmir within a span of four months, earning the sobriquet of ‘Alpine Girl’.
- Probably, she is the first female to trek to these high-altitude lakes. Tahir has been working in the trekking industry for nearly a decade. “Undoubtedly, she will be the first female to cover 50 Alpine Lakes in one season spread across the Kashmir valley,” he said.
- Namratha Nandish, who stays in the Bengaluru’s Bellandur area, started with Tulian Lake, which is sandwiched between the Pir Panjal and the Zanskar mountain ranges in South Kashmir’s Pahalgam area, and concluded with Shilsar Lake in the higher reaches of the Anantnag-Kishtwar area.
- “Nothing was predetermined. It all started with an idea of my husband, Abhishek, adding a visit to Srinagar in the previous winters. He wanted to see the frozen Dal Lake,” says Nandish. The couple embarked on their journey to the Kashmir Valley on January 26. “I had done my homework and had decided to trek 33 lakes during the season as a birthday gift to myself,” Nandish, who turned 33 this year.
- An HR manager in an information technology company, the work from home facility, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, came in handy for her to reach her goal during the trekking season, which started in mid-June.
- “I have trekked around 460 kms over 31 days during this year’s season and that too when I had a full-time job at hand,” she said.

10602. Covid-19 vaccination: 4 crore women jabbed in West Bengal
- Over 4 crore women have been vaccinated in Bengal, the highest after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Bengal has reduced the male-female gender gap in vaccination to only 7.5 lakh.
- According to the CoWin Dashboard real-time vaccination data, though UP has vaccinated 6.2 crore women and Maharashtra has vaccinated 5.3 crore women, the gender-gap in vaccination in these states is over 70 lakh, nearly 10 times more than in Bengal.
- South Indian states, like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh, have already bridged the gender divide, vaccinating more women than men. Bihar is a new entrant on this list.
- In end July, CM Mamata Banerjee had announced that all women who have children aged between one and 12 will be included on the priority vaccination list in all government vaccination sites.
- Incidentally, rural Bengal is leading the drive in women’s vaccination. Bengal is also throwing up an urban-rural gender divide in its vaccination drive. “In rural Bengal, a small amount of vaccine hesitancy among men is being reported. Compared to them, women in rural Bengal have shown vaccine eagerness,” a senior health department official said.
- “Life expectancy indicators among women are better and Covid fatality rate among women is also less than in men, indicating an enhanced resilience. These factors, coupled with vaccination, will ensure children and the elderly — the most vulnerable groups who spend a lot of time with women in households — are safe,” the official said.

10603. Italian art meets Indian craft
- Mumbai-based Shachee Shah has brought the ancient tradition of micro mosaic to India, which originated in Italy as keepsakes that travellers took back, but is now almost lost in Europe.
- Shah began her journey wanting to study fashion but discovered micro mosaic on a trip to Italy. Her intense study led to her brand of micro mosaic jewellery, which is Italian in concept but with an Indian heart and Indian motifs. She calls it the Garden of Bliss, with Nature as her main inspiration. Art, history, wildlife and vintage objects are her other inspirations.
- The raw material in mosaic jewellery consists of tiny rods of gold and Venetian glass enamel, which are formed by mixing different colours (called Smalto). These are pulled into threads at a temperature of 1200 degrees and then left to cool. The process is highly skilled and time-consuming.
- Each of these glass-pulled threads (tessera) are cut in microns and arranged together to create a pattern. Shah creates the pattern with her naked eye. Because each piece is completely handcrafted, it is unique and unrepeatable. All gold used is 18-karat, and the glimmer comes from natural diamonds and precious gems. She called this the Venetian collection.
- When Shah started her line, she worked on each piece herself, from the block of gold to the finished piece. Now with avid demand, she has added helping hands to her production process.
- Shah prefers to work through personal appointments at her studio, and through exhibitions at stores and galleries. She has a market abroad too, with women in the UAE, UK and the USA eager to wear her jewels. She is going to introduce a new jewellery technique by the end of 2021.

- Deepti Yenireddy was born into a middle-class family in Hyderabad to a father who was a tennis coach and a homemaker mother. Deepti developed an interest in physics and science early on. From 2006 to 2009, she worked at oil field companies like Schlumberger and Shell, and travelled across the oil fields in Bahrain, Egypt, and Scotland.
- “I was managing teams in high-pressure situations, with millions of dollars at stake. This was in remote places across India where there were no toilets, no places to sleep…I was the only woman.
