675. Govt mandates 'Sanchar Saathi App' on all mobile handsets used in India
- On December 2, 2025, the DoT mandated that all mobile phones made or imported for India must come with the Sanchar Saathi app pre-installed, fully visible and functional at first use, to curb fake handsets, IMEI tampering, telecom misuse and cyber-fraud under the Sanchar Saathi cybersecurity initiative.
- The app allows users to verify handset authenticity via IMEI, report fraudulent calls/messages, identify connections in their name, and block or check stolen/blacklisted devices—critical because India’s large second-hand market often sees spoofed IMEIs and resale of stolen phones, creating security risks and financial loss.
- Manufacturers must push the app via software updates for devices already in the market, comply with Telecom Cyber Security rules, and complete implementation in 90 days (with reporting in 120 days), enabling stricter action on tampered IMEIs and improving telecom safety nationwide.
