23181. India's coal import rises by 15% in December
- Coal will continue to play a major role in new electricity generation capacity in India, Reliance Power Ltd.'s Chief Executive Jayarama Chalasani said
- Non-coking coal imports were at 15.63 MT in December this fiscal against 14.21 MT in the same month last fiscal
- The country's coal import rose by 15.1% to 23.63 million tonnes (MT) in December 2020 compared to 20.52 MT in the year-ago month.

23182. First exports of country's homegrown Bharat Biotech Covid shot likely this week
- Bharat Biotech has already supplied millions of doses of COVAXIN, developed with the state-run Indian Council of Medical Research. India's Bharat Biotech said on Tuesday it was likely to export its Covid-19 vaccine to Brazil and the United Arab Emirates this week, a major success for the shot approved at home for emergency use without efficacy data from a late-stage trial.
- Bharat Biotech has also applied to conduct a Phase III trial for COVAXIN in Brazil, which plans to import 8 million doses of it in February and another 12 million in March.
- Bharat Biotech has also sought emergency use authorisation in the Philippines. The company has supplied 5.5 million doses to the Indian government and is selling 4.5 million more, the spokeswoman added.

23184. Balrampur Chini Mills : Container shortage slows Indian sugar exports, fuels price rally
- India's sugar exports could fall by 12% to 5 million tonnes this year as a shortage of containers slows trade and threatens to drive up global prices that are already at four-year highs, industry officials told.
- The lower exports from the world's second biggest sugar producer, especially during the first half of 2021, could also allow rival Brazil to increase shipments in the second half of the year when Brazil does the bulk of its exporting.
- India could export 5 million tonnes of sugar in the 2020/21 season ending on Sept. 30, lower than last year's 5.7 million tonnes

23185. Rice exports to China a boost to Haryana industry
- The demand for the Indian non-basmati varieties of rice by China, which is the largest producer of rice in the world, has given a boost to the state industry. So far, eight exporters from the state have been supplying broken rice to China.
- The industrialists are expecting good prospects in coming days as well, as they have a good stock of broken rice owing to less demand by the liquor industry during the Covid-induced lockdown.

23186. GJEPC signs MoU with eBay to boost retail exports of Gems & Jewellery from India
- The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), apex body of Gem & Jewellery trade in India since 1966 signed an MoU with ES Online Services (India) Pvt. Ltd. (an eBay Group Company) to provide impetus to Indian Gem & Jewellery sellers on the global e marketplace.
- eBay will create a micro site (‘Made in India’ page) for GJEPC Members selling in eBay websites. GJEPC Members subscribing on eBay marketplace(s) will be placed together on this proposed micro site for better accessibility. 23187. Kochi to become the first city with water metro project with launch of electric boats
- Kochi has become the first city with a water metro project as it launches the first in a series of battery-powered electric boats in the city.
- The new project by the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd will likely have an integrated water transport system with 15 identified routes. It will connect 10 islands along a network of routes that span 76 km with a fleet of 78 fast, electrically propelled hybrid ferries plying to 38 jetties.
- This project has a total cost of Rs 819 crore. It uses LTO batteries, which is the latest in battery technology with a capability for fast charging.
23188. Flying taxi startup The ePlane Company raises $5 million
- IIT-Madras incubated 'flying taxi' startup The ePlane Company has raised $5 million in a pre-Series A funding round. This round was led by deep-tech VC firm Speciale Invest and EV/Climate-focused fund Micelio.
- The startup, which is betting on eradicating traffic by building electric planes for short-range intra-city commute, plans to use the funds to hire top-tier talent, advance R&D, and continue to gain airworthiness provision and initiate certification. Founded in 2017 and launched in 2019, The ePlane Company is the brainchild of aerospace engineering
- The company aspires to build a compact flying taxi e200 for passengers, as well as cargo transport that could help reduce congestion on the roads and emissions from ground transport and lower the risk of road accidents. The startup has already test flown the lab-scale prototype of the e200 and is on course to do a full-scale prototype in April 2022.
23189. L&T bags third order for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project
- Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has bagged a third order for the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail popularly referred to as the bullet train project from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd, the engineering major said
- While the company did not disclose the exact order size, it said it was “significant” and in the range of Rs 1,000-2,500 crore. At 10:45 IST, shares of L&T were trading at 1922.95 on BSE, up almost 1% from the previous close.
- The project undertaken, called ‘MAHSR-C-5’, entails design and construction of civil and building works for a double-line high-speed railway of a length of 8.198 km. L&T had previously won two other packages (MAHSR – C-4 and MAHSR C-6) and is in the process of executing them. In October 2020, it won ‘MAHSR – C-4’, its biggest ever engineering, procurement and construction job worth around Rs 25,000 crore.
23190. Mango exports expected to surge after 2-year gap
- After a gap of two years, the export of mangoes and by-products is expected to see a spurt after India and the US agreed to simplify the rules, Apeda, the agency responsible for the export of food products, has said.
