23171. Indian rice exporters start new year on a positive note as Vietnam buys after decades, Bangladesh lowers import duty
- The 100 percent broken rice is priced lower than other grades by over $50 (Rs 3,650) a tonne and India, the world’s second-largest rice producer, is the most competitive destination for rice of such a grade.
- Indian rice exporters have started the New Year on a bright note, bagging orders to ship to Vietnam, the world’s third-largest exporter, after decades and expecting to cash in on the Bangladesh government order to lower Customs duty on rice imports.
- “We have got orders to export rice to Vietnam between 50,000 tonnes and one lakh tonnes. It may not buy consistently from India,” said Rice Exporters Association (REA) president BV Krishna Rao.

23172. Exports of Basmati Rice from India increases due to high demand in European Nations
- Amidst the farmers’ tumult, South Asians in Belgium and the Netherlands are loading up on basmati rice from India, profiting producers in Punjab and Haryana. Exports of basmati rice from India to Belgium have heightened by 60% in the initial eight months of the current fiscal year, while the Netherlands imports have practically multiplied twice
- Customers in Europe are loading up on basmati rice as the fear of a new strain of the Covid-19 that might lead to another lockdown is making rounds. - Export’s of India's basmati rice climbed 29% to a total of 3.05 million metric tons in the initial eight months of this fiscal year. Saudi Arabia, Yemen along with Iraq have purchased great amounts of rice, said Executive director of the All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA), Vinod Kaul. India delivered 7.5 million tons of basmati rice in 2019-20, of which 61% was sent out, procuring the nation Rs 31,025 crore, as indicated by the commerce and industry ministry.

23173. Outfits cheer as govt drops ‘halal’ meat tag
- Organisations, which have been campaigning against “halal” certification of meat, have welcomed the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) decision to remove the term from the specifications for export of red meat,
- “Not only the meat produced in country for import but meat served everywhere in India be it hotels, restaurants, trains, flights are halal meat, which is considered haram for many communities here as well as other countries,” said Harinder Sikka from Halal Niyantran Manch (Halal Regulation Forum), which had on several occasions petitioned the government to remove the term.
- but said this is only a first step towards the goal to ensure that meat of animals and poultry who are slaughtered in accordance with Islamic religious guidelines is not served to those who are unwilling to consume it

- भारत सरकार ने 2025 तक 35,000 करोड़ रुपये के रक्षा उत्पाद निर्यात करने का लक्ष्य रखा है। भारत अपने उन मित्र देशों को मजबूत करना चाहता है जो चीन की आक्रामकता की वजह से अधिक प्रभावित हैं।
- वियतनाम सहित दक्षिण पूर्व एशिया के अधिकांश देश दक्षिण चीन सागर पर चीन की दबंगई को खुलेआम चुनौती दे रहे हैं। फिलीपींस तो अब चीन को साफ शब्दों में कह चुका है कि वह उसके किसी भी दुस्साहस पर उससे उसी ढंग से निपटेगा। ऐसे देशों को भारतीय मदद उन्हें और ताकतवर बनाएगी।
- वियतनाम चीन से बचाव के लिए इसे खरीदना चाहता है। इस अत्याधुनिक मिसाइल सिस्टम को बेचने के लिए भारत की नजर में वियतनाम के अतिरिक्त 15 अन्य देश भी हैं। वियतनाम के बाद फिलहाल जिन देशों से बिक्री की बातचीत चल रही है उनमें इंडोनेशिया, दक्षिण अफ्रीका, चिली, ब्राजील, फिलीपींस, मलेशिया, थाईलैंड और संयुक्त अरब अमीरात हैं। उल्लेखनीय है कि इन सभी देशों के साथ दक्षिण चीन सागर मसले पर चीन के साथ तनातनी चल रही है

23175. केंद्र ने मिलों को चीनी निर्यात का कोटा किया जारी
- केंद्र सरकार ने चीनी निर्यात करने के लिए सब्सिडी की घोषणा की है। इसके अनुसार मिलों को निर्यात की जाने वाली चीनी का कोटा भी आवंटित कर दिया गया है।
- देश में चीनी 3100 रुपये प्रति क्विंटल से कम नहीं बिक सकती है लेकिन विदेश को चीनी 100 रुपये प्रति क्विंटल और सस्ती बिकेगी। पिछले साल अंतराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर चीनी के दाम 2400 रुपये प्रति क्विंटल थे।
- सरकार ने निर्यात पर प्रति किलो चीनी पर दस रुपये की सब्सिडी देने की घोषणा की थी। यानी मिलों की चीनी 3400 रुपये प्रति क्विंटल तक मिले। इस बार भी अंतरराष्ट्रीय बाजार में यहीं दाम हैं लेकिन सरकार ने सब्सिडी चार रुपये प्रति किलो तक कम कर दी है।

23176. India's December trade deficit widens to $15.44 billion
- India's trade deficit in goods widened to $15.44 billion in December as imports rose to $42.59 billion, pushed by a surge in gold imports, while merchandise exports were up marginally, revised data released by the government showed.
- The merchandise trade deficit was $12.49 billion in December 2019.
- The merchandise exports rose 0.14% in December from a year earlier to $27.15 billion, the data showed.

23177. Agriculture Tax Increase On Crude Palm Oil Imports Could Reduce Shipments
- India's palm oil imports have been rising since December 2020 after the country had cut its import tax on the oil to 27.5 per centin late November.
- The cess would provide resources for "an immediate need to improve agricultural infrastructure," Ms Sitharaman said.
- The tax increase will narrow the duty gap between palm oil and other edible oils, which could reduce India's palm oil imports and potentially put pressure on Malaysian palm oil prices.

23179. India approves 156 defence equipment for export
- India approved the export of 156 defence equipment, including Astra missiles and Tejas indigenous Light Combat Aircraft, artillery guns, explosive, tanks and missiles, anti-tank mines and others, worth an estimated Rs35,000 crore, as the government is looking at enhancing defence exports to friendly countries.
- The export list also includes 19 aeronautical systems, 16 nuclear-biological-chemical equipment, 41 armament and combat systems, 28 naval systems, 27 electronic and communication systems, 10 life protection items, four missile systems, four micro-electronic devices and seven other material.
- Defence Research Development Organisation (DRD0) released the extended list, which now includes even Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air missile Astra, anti-tank guided missile Nag and Brahmos weapon system.

23180. India to bring down defence equipment import bill by $2 billion by 2022: Singh
- To attract foreign investment into defence manufacturing, the Modi government last year announced a slew of measures including raising the cap on foreign investment from 49% to 74%.
- Indian companies were awarded defence contracts worth $37 billion during 2016-19, defence minister Rajnath Singh said, adding that New Delhi will endeavour to bring down its defence equipment import bill by at least $2 billion by 2022.
- It has also brought out a list of 101 items that India will not import.
